Anglo-Yanks set off

England's Championship began today but Jay DeMerit was the only one of the six Americans in that division to see playing time.

The US center back went the 90 as Watford, a club surrounded by financial uncertainty, drew 0-0 at Crystal Palace. Derby, minus Benny Feilhaber and Eddie Lewis, lost 1-0 at home to Doncaster, Sheffield Wednesday, without the injured Frankie Simek, began with aplomb, thumping Burnley 4-1 at Hillsborough to move into first place.

Bobby Convey's & Marcus Hahnemann's Reading play at Nottingham Forest tomorrow.

In League One, Zak Whitbread went the distance as Millwall lost 4-3 at Oldham Athletic, while Jemal Johnson played the last eleven minutes as his MK Dons fell 2-0 at Leicester City.
Ian Joyce was on the bench as his Southend United team finished 1-1 at home to Peterborough United.

Clint Dempsey was a second half subsitute as Fulham tied Torino 2-2 at Craven Cottage in their last warm-up game before the Premier League season begins next Saturday.

The other Americans with EPL employment this season are Eddie Johnson (Fulham), Brad Friedel and Brad Guzan (both Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton) and Jonathan Spector (West Ham).
