He Said What?

It's time for another look at what Americans Abroad are saying, what others are saying about them and what is being said by their managers about important club matters.

-------

Freddy Adu has arrived at Monaco, and gave his first official squad member interview (presumably while being dwarfed by new manager Ricardo). True to form, the U.S. star was ready when questioned over what he knew of the French honor division.

"Many things because, for several years, I made a habit of watching the Sunday night Ligue 1 match that was broadcast in the United States."

The interviewer also suggested he could make his debut when Caen pays a Stade Louis visit this weekend. Adu reported that, despite being a bit travel weary after the Summer Olympics, he is fit and willing to see action right away.

"Training went well today. I am ready for a match!"

-------

Speaking of French top flighters: the agent for Standard Liège defender Oguchi Onyewu, Lyle Yorks has poured cold water on recent Paris St. Germain rumours in FootMercato, but again admitted that there was a Ligue 1 team making a pitch.

"PSG has not contacted me or the player. But one (Ligue 1 club) is still in discussions."

-------

Toronto FC general manager Mo Johnston has set the Ibrox bar high for departing midfielder Maurice Edu, who signed with his beloved Rangers directly after completing for the U.S. at the Summer Olympics.

"Mo is a guy who can sit right in the pocket and break up play, and that is even if the ball is being moved very quickly. He can also go goal-to-goal as well... I would be very surprised if he is not regarded as a superstar and a real hero by the fans at the end of his time at the club."

With league leaders Kalmar set to invade Söderstadion Thursday for a Swedish Cup semifinal
, red-hot Hammarby forward Charlie Davies is ready to leave behind the disappointment of watching an early two-goal home lead over GAIS evaporate into a 4-2 defeat on Friday night.

The U.S. international, who has eight goals and three assists in 16 games this season, is determined to make certain the team earns a UEFA Cup bid for the fall.

"I want to win the Cup, it would be huge for Hammarby and for me. I will also help Bajen reach the top three in the league... a Cup win and a top three finish, that would make for a successful season."

What's the difference with Davies this year? It sure seems like he has figured it out. He's been incredible compared to his first year in Sweden.

Charlie started picking up his play near the end of last season, so he's definitely gotten more comfortable in Sweden - which, let's remember, is his first pro experience of any kind. That said, he did play better last season than his stats indicated. His finishing was often poor, but he also had a run of bad luck in front of goal. In any event, he has certainly taken the lid off of opposing nets in 2008.
