Welcome to the proper

With the Champions League group stage and UEFA Cup first round set to begin, let's go over the European matches this week involving Americans and their clubs.

Jozy Altidore is not on Villarreal's roster for Wednesday's daunting Champions League trip to face holders Manchester United in their Group F opener, so stateside fans will sharpen focus on UEFA Cup matches.

UEFA Cup

Tuesday

Hertha Berlin v St. Pat's (Ryan Guy)

Neither Bryan Arguez nor Ellis McLoughlin will dress for the hosts.

Thursday

Everton (Tim Howard) v Standard Liège (Oguchi Onyewu)
Rennes (Carlos Bocanegra) v. FC Twente
Borussia Dortmund (Neven Subotić) v. Udinese
Litex Lovech v. Aston Villa (Brad Friedel, Brad Guzan)
Wolfsburg (Kamani Hill) v. Rapid Bucharest
Napoli (Vincenzo Bernardo) v. Benfica

One of the round's marquee match-ups begins with Gooch and the Belgian champs invading Goodison Park, while U.S. backline partner Bocanegra & Co. host stern testers FC Twente. However, Hill and Bernardo will be spectators at their teams' home matches.

Programming note: I will be doing an Everton v. Standard LIVE on Thursday at around 3 pm ET, which will naturally also include updates from the other pertinent games.

I'm not so sure you should bother at all with Ferrari this season since he's out on loan to Perugia.

Who Vincenzo Bernardo? I didn't realize we had another Italian-based player to look in on.

What's the word on this kid?
