Donovan joins Bayern on loan

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have begun making a loan offer to MLS for Galaxy star Landon Donovan, who scored both first team goals in a win over the reserves on Wednesday. The base idea is to bring him over for a two months (a la Beckham-to-Milan), but with a view towards extending his stay until the end of the season - and if all goes well, presumably beyond.

"The goal will be to see if we can get him long term, at least until the end of the season." - Bayern coach Jürgen Klinsmann

Unfortunately, I was out this afternoon and didn't find out until Bayern offices had closed, but you can bet I will be on the phone tomorrow morning. I just tried to pry with Donovan agent Richard Motzkin, but he politely offered me a 'No comment', which means the deal isn't done.

Here is the official story.

UPDATE: Donovan has reportedly completed a January-to-March loan move to Bayern. As I've said previously, I think he will do well at Allianz Arena. I will now add that I also believe he will eventually make the switch permanent.

UPDATE UPDATE: Still no official confirmation from either club, though I'm hoping to get someone good from Bayern on the phone after the lunch hour.
