That is all.
#1 - All together now... "Charlie Davies can't stop scoring."
Yup, CD made it a dirty dozen for the season, good enough for fifth best in the Swedish top flight, with a hustle header on Monday night. See it here (media player link).
#2 - I still have a Top 5 List ready to go, and you have my solemn word it will be up later today.
Explanation for its tardiness? After Sean dropped his post last night, I wanted to give it time at the top.
#3 - Despite moving from the Sideline to The Touchline, Luis Bueno has not missed a beat recapping our American boys playing in Mexico. This week's lowdown is here.
#4 - Soccernet's Frank Dell'Apa has an interesting soccer talk with Celtics superstar Kevin Garnett. I still think he should have come to the Suns, but KG is pretty damn cool in my book.
#5 - I've mentioned briefly on a few occasions, but in case you're unaware, RSL's Andy Williams is taking a lot on his shoulders these days. His wife is suffering from Leukemia, but the veteran is being a champ for everyone and it is not going unnoticed. He is inspiring his teammates to heights previously unknown, while they take action to help with his medical bills. For anybody that forgets these players are people, Salt Lake Tribune's All-Star Michael Lewis has the story.
#6 - File this under "Oi vey": our pal over at Sports Illustrated, Grant Wahl, has done a little digging to discover that Spice Boy Beckham has an escape clause in his Galaxy deal that goes live at the end of next season. Hmmm.
Seems to me Los Angeles better look into winning next season. How fast can you say "ta" or "adios" to Landon Donovan?
#7 - As we always do about this time, let's look at the Americans participating in UEFA Cup group matches this week. Since we only have a very tricky two, I'll take a closer look...
Standard Liège (Onyewu) v. Sevilla
For Gooch & Co., there is no let-up in the quality of Euro-opponents. In fact, this may well be a far more difficult match-up than they had with either Everton or Liverpool. Not only do Sevilla arrive at Sclessin with plenty of firepower (Onyewu best get to know Luis Fabiano very well), they will show up angry, having lost two straight in La Liga.
Standard, also coming off a league defeat, had Matchday One off, while their Thursday visitors were easing past Stuttgart. "The loss against Charleroi can kan ultimately be positive, as long as everyone learned their lesson about the mistakes we made," said Onyewu.
The potentially good news for Les Rouches is Sevilla will be missing the striker trio of Javier Chevantón, Freddy Kanouté and Arouna Koné. Furthermore, winger extraordinaire Diego Capel and midfield stopper Renato are in doubt. On the down side, Standard will likely be forced to go without Milan Jovanovic, who is nursing a groin knock.
Slavia Prague v. Aston Villa (Friedel, Guzan)
Don't go chalking up three points for the Villans just yet. This is very tricky away game - just ask Ajax, Arsenal, Fiorentina and Tottenham, all of whom have combined for one win in four European visits the last two seasons. Ajax were the lone road victor - and they ended up getting bumped from Champions League qualification by Slavia in the home leg.
Brad Friedel will need to be most concerned with target man prodigy Tomáš Necid, who leads the Czech league in goals and is drawing Bundesliga glances, as well as support runners Tijani Belaid and Vladimír Šmicer.
Aston Villa are in form and healthy (only Wilifred Bouma is absent), but don't say I didn't warn ya if they have a tough night.
#8 - The first MLS season awards have been handed out. Congrats to Crew keeper Jon Busch and Revs fair play defender Michael Parkhurst.
#9 - Look for exclusives with KC's Davy Arnaud, Houston's Brian Ching and Crew boss Sigi Schmid, among others, at Soccer365 this week.
#10 - Okay, time to finish work so I can have a long nap to get ready to stay up all night watching election returns...
- Greg Seltzer
