Stuttgart v Bayern mini-LIVE

Yes, I will update, but not at the usual rate. I shall pick up the pace, though, should Landon Donovan enter the fray. Our man is on the bench, so here are your line-ups:

Bayern - Rensing; Lell, Lucio, Demichelis, Lahm, Schweinsteiger, van Bommel, Zé Roberto, Ribery, Toni, Klose

Vfb - Lehmann; Osorio (Mexico international), Tasci, Delpierre, Boka, Khedira, Hitzlsperger, Hilbert, Bastürk, Simak, Gomez

Like my collapse, kickoff is imminent...

9'

No score as of yet. Toni seems to be looking around for Lando.

A quick score update: Gregg Berhalter and 1860 Munich are down 2-0 at Hamburg in the 78th minute.

11'

Somehow, Demichelis puts a completely clean free kick header over from six meters. Egads!

14'

1-0 Bayern! Basti Fantasti Schweinsteiger steals an errant pass, works toward the area and beats Lehmann.

16'

2-0 Bayern! Ribery touches home a Toni cutback after the visitors swarm Stuttgart's net.

20'

Klose wants a spot kick after Boka handles his goalward shot, and he gets it. However, Ribery's cutesy chip down the middle attempt scores an "Epic fail!" when Lehmann doesn't budge an inch and catches easily.

29'

Someone may want to inform Stuttgart that are actually participating in this game.

38'

I missed the last few moments. My roomie Pierre came home with seven people for an impromptu dinner party and I went over to the kitchen to say my hello's and spy what they were cooking up.

43'

3-0 Bayern! Toni caps another Bavarian jailbreak by softly chipping past Lehmann.

HALFTIME
--

So far, Bayern are getting plenty of practice on their half-court offense. I can only assume Donovan comes on within the first 20 minutes of the second half.

SECOND HALF
--

48'

Marica appears to cut into the lead by pouncing on a fat free kick rebound, but the flag is up.

55'

4-0 Bayern! Schweinsteiger scores from the spot after Zé Roberto is cut down in the area by Lehmann. Ohhhhh Landoooooon!!!

59'

Gomez beats the flailing Rensing from distance, but catches the bar.

Altintop is the first Bayern sub, replacing Schweinsteiger.

60'

5-0 Bayern! Zé Roberto slots past the onrushing Lehmann after an exquisite lead pass from Toni.

64'

Ribery sees yellow, joining Toni in the book. It shouldn't be long now, I'd think.

67'

Donovan in for Toni.

69'

Donovan scoops up a Van Bommel knock-away, starts Bayern forward in high gear with an outlet, and then gets a chance trailing the forwards. Unfortunately, he screws a pretty nice chance a few meters wide of the right post. A clear mis-hit, there.

70'

Lehmann snares a cross meant for Donovan before the front-running American can pounce.

SCORE UPDATES:

Hamburg 3-1 1860 Munich FT
Sunderland 0-0 Fulham HT
Pompey 0-1 Aston Villa 55'
Watford 1-0 Burnley 55'
Reading 1-0 Wolves 55'
MK Dons 1-1 Leyton Orient 55'
Millwall 0-0 Hereford 55'
Rangers 2-0 Falkirk 55'
Sassulo 0-0 Brescia FT (Szetela 7 min.)

77'

Stuttgart sub Lanig narrowly misses on a corner kick header.

79'

Stuttgart suddenly have become aware they are in a football contest. You're all just in time for dessert. Toffee cookies!!

85'

Goal Stuttgart 5-1! Gomez taps in after corner kick takes a pinball ricochet to his foot. Whatever... the home mascot (an alligator?) still looks utterly despondent.

FULL TIME
--

Bayern do the business, and Landon looks energetic in his debut stint. To their meager credit, Stuttgart looked great over the last 15 minutes, shrewdly capitalizing on away backline fatigue from all the extra goal celebration running.

Hope we made your work afternoon go by a little bit faster. I will post full highlights in a spell. I'm off to go get Distract-notized.

Great! Thanks for enduring for all of us fans!

Just a question - How/where are you watching it?

Greg Seltzer said...

I am fortunate enough to have two German TV stations on my cable, including ZDF, which carries DfB Pokal matches.

Woo! Excellent! What a strong showing early!

I'm inclined to say that a few goal lead increases the chances that Donovan gets in, possibly earlier than originally anticipated.

Yeah, at this rate he'll start warming at the half hour.

I've just been asked via email to list all the international TV stations I get here. Okay then...

Dutch (obviously), 2 German, BBC's 1 and 2 from England, 1 Turkish, 1 French, 1 Italian, 1 Spanish and Eurosport.

Aside from channels with football, I also get CNN International, BBC News and the Dutch Comedy Central (what a sweet channel that is!).

Not to plug a competing live-blog, but I thought I'd throw this link out there, for other people who are interested in following the game:

http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kicker.de%2Fnews%2Flive-news%2Flivescores%2Flivematch%2Fobject%2F865825&sl=de&tl=en&history_state0=

Google's translation of Kicker.de's website isn't perfect, but I am finding it surprisingly readable

I've now been asked by the same person to list the nationalities of the dinner guests. Erm... okay:

Not counting Pierre (France), we have two Italians, two Dutchies, one German, one Israeli and one Malaysian.

That's right, one Jew and one Muslim. We like to be part of the solution (tips hat to Jurassic 5) in this house.

Hmmm, why was Altintop(sp?) put in? There really is no reason for Landon to not come in.

Bradicus said...

Greg - I had read that Stuttgart was a good team on the right track. I didn't expect a 4-0 thrashing before the game was even over.

Can you comment on whether Bayern is playing this well, or Stuttgart is playing this poorly?

The answer is usually a combination of both, but at this point it's looking like Stuttgart needs to shoot Ribery, Schweinsteiger and Toni to even have a chance!

5-0! Oh man I want to see Landon before I have to head to class.

Greg Seltzer said...

@ Bradicus: Lemme put it this way...

Stuttgart. Look. Garbage.

Bradicus said...

Holy crap I'm excited.

Thanks for the detailed notes of his play!

Greg Seltzer said...

My privilege, Bradicus.

It's like Lollapolooza - we have two stages going.

Thanks for the updates Greg. Landon missed a chance in the 69th, damn!

Bradicus said...

It's unfortunate Donovan missed his chance, but you can't expect a guy to only get one chance per game and bury it each time. He'll play more and get more chances. It's not every game that he will score 2 goals in 30 minutes! ;-)

Thanks for the updates Greg. Get some rest!

Stuttgart has been riddled by a combination of key injuries and a sub-par 2008 transfer season. Their talent pool isn't deep enough to give a team like Bayern much of a fight most nights. Mario Gomez has spent most of the year hobbled to one degree or another so you didn't see his best either.

Greg Seltzer said...

Yeah, they've made some awful buys the last couple years... but they should be able to do better than look ilke the Washington Generals for 75 minutes. :D
