After proving doubters wrong against Spain, U.S. coach Bob Bradley proved the official CONCACAF site wrong by calling 23 players for the Gold Cup, several of whom were not featured on the "provisional squad" they posted last week.
Among those not included in the false alert were a quartet of invites I had been hoping would be summoned for this July event for various reasons: Colin Clark, Sam Cronin, Jimmy Conrad and Logan Pause.
There are also, to my tastes, some names missing. Bobby Boswell, Brad Davis, Zak Whitbread and Jeremiah White are more deserving than some called. I also would not have turned down a look at Chris Pontius. With Marcus Hahnemann set to chase the #1 Wolves job in camp, I can see why he was omitted.
With a handful of exceptions, this is a last chance saloon for a lot of guys hoping to nudge their way into the World Cup 2010 frame. For others, it's an opportunity to show what they can do over 90 minutes in starting bids. It should be fun.
GK: Jon Busch (Chicago Fire), Troy Perkins (IK Start), Luis Robles (FC Kaiserslautern)
D: Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Jay Heaps (New England Revolution), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Michael Parkhurst (FC Nordsjaelland), Heath Pearce (Hansa Rostock)
MF: Freddy Adu (AS Monaco), Davy Arnaud (Kansas City Wizards), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Colin Clark (Colorado Rapids), Sam Cronin (Toronto FC), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo), Logan Pause (Chicago Fire), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew)
F: Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas), Charlie Davies (Hammarby IF), Santino Quaranta (D.C. United)
On a somewhat related note, my U.S. v Spain Player Ratings are up at S365.

Yeah Pontius has looked great this year...big, left sided, atheletic. Was one of the best players on the field in last week's ESPN DC vs. Seattle game. I think he has 4 goals and 3 assists. He should have been picked.
I love his flair for the big play. He ever so slightly reminds me of Cletus in that manner.
Well, I love Boswell (he plays for my favorite team), but he has had some worrying lapses of concentration on long balls over his head. I would actually like to see Geoff Cameron called up. He is a big presence, has some speed, and has been playing excellently as a center fullback when his regular position is at midfield. I wouldn't want to throw him into the mix at left fullback this close to World Cup, but maybe for the future....?
Count me as one who thinks, though he's done really well filling in for Robinson, his best days ahead are out of midfield.
Well, count me as someone incredibly disappointed in this roster.
I can't believe we're not bringing in guys like Jeremiah White, Zak Whitbread, Danny Szetela, Sal Zizzo, Preston Zimmerman, etc.
Also - where's Jose Francisco Torres? This should be the tournament where we let Adu, Torres, and Davies get lots of playing time.
Urgh... I meant to include Whitbread in my "Where is he?" list and forgot.
I am blown away that Torres isn't on the roster. What I have seen of him I like. Does his club team have games coming that they needed him from?
The Mexican Apertura starts on July 24th, so he will be busy in preseason camp.
Greg,
What are the chances that US Soccer pushed for an "MLS" squad in an attempt to sell tickets?
Disregard the fact that may or may not be a hilariously dumb decision.
Is Altidore to Olympiakos happening? That is what Goff is reporting, but I've also heard that Fulham among others are interested in a season long loan.
What about Gooch? Have you heard any more on him?
I would expect, since Greg is so quiet right now that there are a NUMBER of US players that could be on the move and garnering interest. Tease us Greg. Please.
Agree with everyone on Whitbread.
Really surprised at Brad Davis being left off. I seem to remember him refusing an invite from Bradley to a Jan camp a few years ago (he was getting married at that time) and he hasn't been called up since.
