A few things...

I will add to this throughout the day, so be sure to check back. I'm sorry I'm not savvy enough to figure a way to RSS an updated post or update an RSS post or whatever you damn kids are doing these days (shakes fist)...

#1 - I got a chance to talk with U.S. forward Jozy Altidore about the team's Confederations Cup experience and his club status at Villarreal. The teen striker hopes to be onboard with the Yellow Submarines this season, but will go on loan again if need be as he wants to be be certain he's in for some playing time.

As for my Player Ratings, my usual second viewing is finished and I'll start typing that up shortly. It has been a busier early day on the horn than I expected, but it should be up around lunchtime.

UPDATE: U.S. Player Ratings are finally up... I've been slowed by the phones today.

#2 - Confederations Cup Golden Glove man Tim Howard talks about the final loss.

#3 - Meanwhile, Stabæk midfield ace Mikkel Diskerud scored the winner for the U.S. Under-20's in Egypt this weekend. The team, who got eight saves from Brian Perk, will play a rematch friendly with their hosts today.

#4 - I've seen this happen regularly across Europe over nearly six years on the continent; glad to hear it's now happening back home for the USMNT. Clog that windowfront!!

#5 - MLS Daily all-star TJ Boyce comes back with this week's MLS attendance updates. Yeesh... I see too many big red numbers.

#6 - RSL midfielder Andy Williams has turned down Jamaica's Gold Cup call, which should make things much easier for the club during that tourney. I'd assume it also allows him to be more involved with his wife's recovery.

#7 - ESPN has revealed details of their World Cup 2010 coverage. I, for one, am happy to see Bob Ley and Mike Tirico back on the job.

#8 - The New York Times' Goal Blog has Max Rosenthal checking in after watching the final with U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

#9 - Canada defender Jason DeVos weighs in with his Confederations Cup winners and losers. Meanwhile, the World Cup Blog features 10 things we learned at the tournament.

#10 - I almost forgot: American-born, "A" match uncapped Mexico left back Edgar Castillo says he is up for taking advantage of a FIFA rule change that will allow him to switch international allegiances and suit up for the USMNT. I was actually planning to contact the Tigres loan defender this week, but US Soccer Players scribe Brooke Tunstall beat me to it.

#11 - Former Bolton and Toronto FC striker Johann Smith is on trial with Croatian Europa League qualifier HNK Rijeka, who are led by hot transfer topic playmaker Anas Sharbini.

#12 - We have the MLS Goal of the Week candidates...

Have you seen the "casterol index" ratings yet for the tournament?

Dempsey finished 2nd overall.

Onyewu finished dead last.

How absurd is that?

Greg Seltzer said...

Yeah, I saw that. Ridiculous. Without trying to slight Clint Dempsey at all, Gooch should have won the Bronze Ball in my opinion.

I do find it funny that Lucio was rated as the best player in the tournament, but Kaka won the Golden Ball.

Good marketing by FIFA there.

I just find it interesting that fans watched the first 95% of Dempsey's play through the tournament and were crying for him to be benched (and rightly so), but FIFA's ratings system had him listed consistently in the Top 3 of the tournament.

Actually, I believe that Deuce was 8th after two matches.

I actualy though Landon was deserving of the bronze ball.

Fabiano should of won the golden ball. Most goals and overall biggest impact... especially in the final.

Kaka shouldn't even have been in the top 3.

Landon wasn't half the player that Gooch or DeMerit were through all 5 games.

Greg, maybe it was after the Egypt game that Deuce got his rating so high?

Hamburg in for Charlie???

Good on Edgar! I would be thrilled to welcome another left-side option into the fold.

I doubt Edgar is much better than pearce or bornstein, and probably worse than boca, but it's good to have him as an option. The more competition the better. I say that he's probably not as good only because he couldnt get a game for America, and had to be loaned out.

Greg - how did Johann do for Toronto this year? I've always loved the kid because of his insane speed.

Smith played a fair bit after signing last summer, but was mostly a bench warmer this season. I think he had 3-4 late cameos this year, no goals.

Well, Gooch was obviously hurt by the high number of goals allowed (and probably wild emergency clearances, I'd imagine). Clearly that formula needs to be tweaked, though, because Gooch was hands-down one of the tournament's best defenders.

Can they not take into account number of headers won, opponents muscled off the ball, and forwards left quaking in fear from staredowns? :-)
