England tiring of the cult of David

"Becks faces baying mob" screamed the cover of one of London's free toilet tissues yesterday. It is the silly season with not enough Swine Flu deaths, suicidal bankers or killer sharks in UK waters to make a good lead story out of.

Much ado about not much I want to say: The booing was nothing on the scale of Mo Johnston's defection to Rangers 20 years ago, or an average EPL outing for Cristiano Ronaldo; the theatre is good publicity for MLS and who is crying over Becks and his $250,000,000 contract anyway? His will-he-won't-he approach to a mouthy fan recalls former teammate Eric Cantona's kung-fu kick on a Crystal Palace lout. Cantona's press 'conference' was a gem, introducing the concept of poetic allegory to two-dollar hacks:

Becks has given the finger to English fans before but never gone as far as confronting them. Why so now? The Guardian's Paul Wilson thinks Becks is losing it; while Mike Norrish in the Telegraph says the incident makes US fans "real" and "finally credible". Gee, thanks Mike. Peter Bills in The Independent however is firmly on the Riot Squad's side

Posh is at a loss, so has turned to retail therapy:

David from Leytonstone is no longer the best player London has produced since Glenn Hoddle, no more the nation's captain and talisman. He is still a useful England squad member. Otherwise he is just Beckham inc. now and it is all about Him. That is why yesterday's banner headline just was not news over here.
