A few things...

#1 - Landon Donovan has slated David Beckham for his flexi-time at the Galaxy - I wish more players would speak their mind like this; they are in the entertainment business after all.

Comments are extracts from Grant Wahl's 'The Beckham Experiment' -Excerpts here on SI. Read the full story to understand where Cakes was coming from... I know Greg is getting stuck into the book and will be reviewing it soon.

#2 - Arsenal's ex-MLS honcho Ivan Gazidis is the latest to call for an EPL salary cap.

#3 - With Karim Benzema Bernabeu-bound, compatriot Franck Ribery, the hottest remaining transfer target of the summer, has told Bayern Munich "It will be Real or nothing," to which Bayern have answered, "Our clear reply is nothing!"

#4 - Michael Owen is set for a shock move to Man United!?!

#5 - A different take on the Confederations Cup and other news by Brian Glanville, 77 year-old doyen of English soccer writers.

#6 - The Three Lions' disaster in the UEFA U21 Final ; but this guy is their future talisman.

#7 - 'Los, Donovan and T-Ho talk about the Brazil heartbreaker, plus we have the first Gold Cup Studio 90 report -

Well, Gazidas is flat-out wrong about there being a salary cap in Major League Baseball, but tgat nit-picking aside I am interested to see how this plays out over the next few years.

And "'Cakes," really? We're STILL gonna be calling him that?

I think I agree with everything I have ever heard Tim Howard say.

It's nice to be able to like your players on the pitch, but it means so much more when you're able to respect them off the pitch.

Actually, I won't be stuck in to Grant's Beckham book until my copy arrives in midweek. But then, yes. :D

A UK govt member broached the topic of EPL money recently but there is as yet little prospect of any cap happening here. But if more Americans enter the club boardrooms...

Any suggestions to replace 'Cakes'? He needs a nickname like every other dude.

I always enjoy reading Glanville, but why does he say that Bradley couldn't get any time at Gladbach? That couldn't be further from the truth.

Continuing with what George said: Bradley played in 28/34 games last season, staring 26. And it wasn't that expensive of a transfer either, even for low-budget Gladbach standards. Sean, you need to call Mr. Glanville on this, with respect of course.

Cakes has spoken his mind since he was being asked his opinion on things, and it is refreshing.

Cakes originated from a big soccer poster I think, 'lannycakes' because of his perceived sensitivity.

I think we all know that he's a tough player who wears his heart on his sleeve.

Yankee Doodle was a song the Brits would sing about us to make fun of us and it is now a "patriotic song". Perhaps Cakes could adopt such a mantra and the people who are offended by it can toughen up like he has ;)

Ha! I last spoke to Mr. Glanville in May at the Ireland v Nigeria friendly and frankly I think he's too old now to care about criticism or fact-checking!

He is extraordinarily opinionated but also personally cordial and a living legend in the press room, with a library of anecdotes stretching back to the early 1950s.

Brian has never given US soccer much credit but has always rated US sports writing superior to Britain's sports reporting tradition.

I'll gently put him right next time ;)

I believe Steven Cohen coined "Landycakes" because he viewed Landon as a coward for choosing to play in LA rather than test himself in Europe. I think that even he would have to agree that his recent performances at Bayern Munich and for the USMNT should earn him a reprieval from the nickname. How about something referencing Lando Calrissian, the ruler of Cloud City? Or referencing the fire he shows in spurring his teammates into action? I like "Eveready" in that he just doesn't stop. If you're going to make fun of something, how about his ritual before penalty kicks? You could call him "shaman"

This seems to be a common misperception. The "Landycakes" inanity was in fact started by some rival MLS fans (and quite some time ago), if I'm not mistaken.

In that context, it's more understandable. Club supporters are supposed to taunt opposing players. What I don't get is USMNT fans joining in the merriment. Why in the world would fans want to bash the manhood of their own key player?
