Benvenuto Signor Gooch

Oguchi Onyewu took part in his first AC Milan training session this morning in Atlanta and met the press as a rossonero this evening at the Georgia Dome.

Milan's website described him at the presentation lovingly as "a colossus, but beneath that mountain of muscle lies a gentle soul, so much so he calls himself emotional." Ah.

(translated from the Italian press release)-

"I was really happy when I was told I would be playing for Milan," said Onyewu. "I must say I was also a bit emotional because playing for such a prestigious club is not something that happens to everyone all the time...I can be useful for this club. I'll try and help my teammates with my physicality if I need to...Obviously in sports, there's no guarantees I'm certainly under the impression that I'll have to play for my spot...I'm still trying to figure out what I need to do because we have a number of great defenders on the squad, and this is the first day that I actually got involved with the team...

I know Serie A very well and I think it's a hard and competitive championship. I'm well aware of the difficulties I'll be facing, with so many good players around me. But this encourages competition and that is important for a team with a lot of ambition because it raises your attention level."

Gooch went on to praise potential teammate Luis Fabiano and Sunday opponent Zlatan Ibrahimovic in response to journalists' questions, before giving his thoughts on David Beckham's dies irae at the Home Depot Center:

"I don't agree with those booing Beckham. I was not there to witness those events but I know there weren't just boos but also some applause. Some people took his return one way and some another. David is a legend and deserves respect."

is gooch expected to suit up for the Club America match? I hope so. Although if he's only been with the team for one day, it can't bode too well...

I fear that Gooch will be another Yank on the bench for a good while... though hopefully not... what do you think greg?

As I said when the news broke, I would almost guarantee Gooch gets at least 20 starts. The rest of the Milano CB stable is one or more of: injury-prone, inexperienced, getting up there in years or sometimes used in another position. I also don't see them after more defenders right now.

I actually don't find it to be going out on that much of a limb to suggest that he very well could ring up the most starts from that stable this season. I'm kinda counting on it, to be honest.
