Drawin' time, cowboys!

A handful of Americans now know how they will enter the fray in the Champions League and Europa League this year, while others have merely learned who comes next. Here are all of today's (at this time) potentially relevant 3rd qualifying round draws for our boys, the teams listed first host leg one:

Champions League

Benfica (Freddy Adu) v Trabzonspor
HJK Helsinki* FC v Dinamo Zagreb* (Alex Molano)
Rangers (Maurice Edu) v Malmö FF*

Europa League

AZ Alkmaar (Jozy Altidore*) v Jablonec*
Domžale/RNK Split v Fulham* (Clint Dempsey)
Mainz 05 (Jared Jeffrey) v KuPS/Gaz Metan Mediaş
Örebro (Alejandro Bedoya)/FK Sarajevo v Sparta Prague
SV Ried v Brøndby (Clarence Goodson)
FC Midtjylland* v Vitória FC (Alex Zahavi)

* - These clubs all lead big after the first leg and are basically being assumed through by me. The same goes for Altidore's AZ deal getting done.

MLSS' "Kick Off" is claiming that you've reported Jozy-to-AZ as a done deal. Is it actually a done deal?

I think Kick Off was alluding to the fact that I came up with this story from the beginning, was the only one who had actual facts and basically left you with the "It's close, it's in the workshop and the elves are on it" cliffhanger a week or so ago.

But no, I have not been given confirmation and cannot report it as done. I can tell you that it has been very close to done for a week now. I talked to Earnie Stewart not long ago and he won't comment further on it until the ink is dry. If I get the final word from somewhere, I will certainly spread it.

I still think it's crazy that Jozy is out talking about a deal that is not signed. That's just bad policy, whether it ends up affecting anything or not, he just sets himself up for looking silly if something goes wrong (and, with deals, there are a million ways it can go wrong).

It's not going to go wrong, it wasn't going to wrong a week ago, It just takes time to dot all the i's.

You know these deals better than I do, so I trust you're right. Just makes me nervous as I have seen many a deal fall apart even when both sides wanted it to get done. I am excited for Jozy, regardless...

Great move for Jozy, he seems to have matured a lot over the past year. I think the Eredivisie is a perfect spot for him to really come into his own. The kid has the talent, it is just a matter of gaining the form and confidence and AZ is a good place to do it.

Matt, you make it sound like he tweeted, "I guess I better find an apartment in Alkmaar" rather than the very innocuous "I guess I better learn Dutch" or whatever it was.

Matt said...

@Jon: Heh. That's true. It was innocuous enough. I just note that NO ONE else from either side is (yet) talking about this yet, which means that they, too, know that there is a risk, however remote, that things could fall apart.

I'm not trying to be the killjoy, just don't want Jozy to jinx it.
