Dem's da breaks. (updated)

I have just been told that AS Roma will not be making a bid for Clint Dempsey today. I'm thinking he's a little too costly and all the added attention isn't helping that.

So does this mean Roma will not be able to snare an American during this window? It sure seems so - but I have not been informed that this is definitively the case. With Deuce, it was clear: "no chance" now.

By the way, MLSS has set up a deadline day ticker, which I will be contributing to along with the rest of the staff.

UPDATE: I just now noticed, but a few hours ago Marco Boriello rejected a move to stay at Roma. Suddenly, we have a slightly deeper context for the outcome of this scene.

Brek Shea to Roma, you heard it hear first...

I was told months ago that they don't know what position he is - things conceivably could have changed, but I have not heard a thing about it.

Were Roma ever really interested in doing anything more than PR with this "We want an American" thing?

Not much about this ongoing story appears to be anything but sensationalism on their part.

Sorry, I was being a wise ass. Transfer day madness. I was chuckling because over at Soccernet it's gotten to the point that they are quoting Sneijder's wife's Twitter feed as a source. (Not that she wouldn't be a credible source, but just love the thought of soccer-mad fans trying to read the so-called tea leaves, desperate for any indicator...)

@ Sea Otter: Yes, it was real. I can't be more clear. Not every plan a team has works out. Anyone who has ever played Championship Manager knows this.

I really don't get how American soccer fans are this cynical. As I said Monday, Roma tried to get in for Bradley, but it was too late. They also were scared off by the price tag on Chandler and the reaction to their interest in Donovan.

Let's put it this way once and for all about Roma wanting an American player:

Either they really did or I have been a bald-faced liar all summer. My name is on every one of my reports.

I vote for bald faced liar ;)

Kidding. You're getting delusional Greg and need some sleep.

Nah, I just hate to see hands wringing and fretting and doubting and fearing the worst when it's not necessary. There's enough stress in life without creating any extra.

Hope you didn't take my comments as an accusation pointed at you. Not the slightest bit true.

For the record, I am not cynical at all about the "quality" or "merit" of American players. We have plenty who would fit in with clubs like Roma, no doubt in my mind. I am cynical about the actions of clubs, quite often. Plenty of their public business, especially surrounding possible transfers, includes misinformation IMO.

I apologize though. No intent to rile you Greg. It was an honest question.

I didn't take it as against me, so no worries. I just get frustrated watching US fans not wanting to believe true things or feeling like they are getting snookered. It happens a lot. It's part of the reason I dig for facts so hard, to squash that stuff.

Sorry if I seemed cross. I really just talk that way, very straightforward. Sometimes, over a written form, even my friends think I seem hostile when I'm chilled. :D
