Klinsi's 24

If this is the best team possible, I'm Han Solo. Not that I mean offense to any player listed below or even have any great complaints... though I'm again dismayed to see Mikkel Diskerud and Chris Rolfe not invited, for at least Belgium.

G - Bill Hamid (DC United), Tim Howard (Everton)

D - Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers), Edgar Castillo (Club América), Timmy Chandler (FC Nürnberg), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Clarence Goodson (Brøndby), Zach Loyd (FC Dallas), Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis), Heath Pearce (Chivas USA), Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls)

M - Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Jeff Larentowicz (Colorado Rapids), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), José Francisco Torres (Pachuca)

F - Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), Jozy Altidore (AZ), Teal Bunbury (Sporting KC), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy)

- Greg Seltzer

Would've liked to see Mikkel Diskerud, Gatt, and Bedoya. George John, I assume, is out because of his recent transfer?

Not sure what Jeff Larentowicz is doing there either. Definitely sticks out, and not in a good way.

Remember the Norwegian league is in squeaky bum time Mix and Gatt are needed there cupcake should be a definite

Greg Seltzer said...

I actually feel it's best to not call Gatt until the season is over.

And yes, he won't call anyway in mid-transfer.

I'd hoped the Beckerman experiment was over, but it's nice to see Bunbury get a nod.

Really wanted to see Mixxxxxxx. D'oh.

I think Klinsman is telling all U.S. players that he will give you a long look. No, call up for a game and never hear from him again. All those guys inserted for the Mexico game will be here for another two games. There are two years until any tough real games.

Greg Seltzer said...

Heh. Then why do we need to drag this whole group from LA to Brussels inside four days? :D

Patrick said...

To build team chemistry of course. Like when hockey teams stay in the same hotel for home games. Okay, hockey players are weird...

I'd like your thoughts on Fabian Johnson. Is he now the best U-21 American? Can he play left back? lol

Jozy is bagging 20 this year. Book it.

I am fairly certain Johnson can play left back

Greg Seltzer said...

1 - No. For starters, he's 23. :D

2 - Not well, I'd think.

3 - I have an article set to go up at MLSS that essentially gives you my entire scouting report on his play.

Forgot to add my other thoughts. Really missing the likes of Gatt, Mixx, and Rolfe. What about bringing Parkhurst in? He's been consistently starting forever. I love that Klinsi is calling in Hamid. He's going to be better than Howard.

Greg Seltzer said...

Parkhurst will probably get a look at some point if he continues playing like he has been.

And remember, all these Scandinavian league guys are super-easy January call-ups. As you can see, Goodson was the only Scandinav-er called up this time.

Well, here are some reasonable explanations.

1) Some players have just transferred to a new team, don't play any/much, or are awaiting a transfer. Guys in this boat: Jones, Bradley, Onyewu, Bedoya, John, Guzan, Lichaj, Adu, Bornstein.

2) Some guys are in the home stretch of their seasons/battling for titles/European footy: Mix & Gatt.

3) Larentowicz is a very good player. Beckerman may miss one of the games.

Still, I'm sort of surprised at the following omissions: Beasley, Feilhaber, Spector, Gomez, Rolfe, Diskerud.

And my usual disappointments for Marshall, Cameron, Davis, Gonzalez, and Convey.

On the plus side: Johnson is a coup. Chandler is a stud.

Shea, Rogers, Agudelo, Beckerman, and Orozco all played well enough to warrant second looks.

And virtually everyone on the Mexico roster will get one. I think JK thought that 2 days wasn't enough. He wants a longer evaluation period.

And just like to add, until Holden is healthy, and Jones/Bradley are actually playing some matches, I think this IS the best we have:

GK: Howard
D: Dolo, Goodson, Boca, Johnson
DM: Edu
M: Chandler, Torres, Donovan
F: Dempsey, Altidore

Maybe throw Kljestan in there and save Chandler for the bench. Shea and Rogers off the bench for speed. Agudelo up top.

Torres is arguable, but the other 10, given present circumstances, I think is the best we have. Mabye Bedoya.

Aarrgg! One last comment.

An awful lot of wingback types in this pool: Dolo, Chandler, Johnson, Castillo. Even Pearce and Loyd to a certain extent. Could we see 3-5-2 at some point?

Greg Seltzer said...

A couple things, True Crew:

1 - At this time, I would definitely have Feilhaber, Bedoya, Kljestan and Diskerud all ahead of Torres.

2 - Everyone forgets Heath Pearce, who I say is still the best natural left back in our pool. He has been overly maligned and under-appreciated for years now.

TrueCrew said...

Thanks for the response, Greg, allow me to retort.

Regarding Pearce. You may indeed be right, but the best natural LB in the pool has been playing CB for club this year, not LB. I king of think he's a utility defender now, Spector on this side of the pond.

Like I said, Torres is the most debatable choice, but I can still make a good case for him being the best CAM/CM in the pool.

I frankly don't see why Diskerud would be ahead of him. 1-2 B side caps? Mexico is a superior league, and Torres has contributed on championship teams for Pachuca. And played in a World Cup. Diskerud is and should be well behind the other 4. Your taking crazy pills, Greg.

I don't see Kljestan and Torres competing for the same spot. I think we'll likely see a DM (Edu, BEckerman, Larentowicz) and 1 CM (Kljestan) and one guy being more the playmaker (CAM: Torers). Kljestan and Torres could even play side by side in a 4-1-4-1.

I think Benny and Bedoya will also get looks in similar roles going forward.

Of the 3 legit guys you mentioned as being ahead of Torres. Feilahber and Bedoya have been playing in inferior leagues to the Mexcian league. Feilahber has been playing wide lately for both club and country. Kljestan wide for club (I beleive). And Bedoya wide for country.

That's why I'd give JFT the edge. Plus, I think he's the best passer of the 4, though it is close. Though his speed of thought might not be up to the others yet.

Hope all 5 get looks as CM/CAM's in the upcoming friendlies, I'm looking forward to it. But I think JK will prefer winger types out wide, so the likes of these guys will have to compete for CM spots mostly, while guys like Donovan, Shea, Rogers, Chandler, Beasley, and Johnson man the outside spots.

Dempsey may be the exception.

Greg Seltzer said...

1 - Yah, and usual CB Bocanegra mostly has played left back with his club for three years. And he's only a "utility defender" because he doesn't get utilized. There may not be any one player who was treated more unfairly during the Bradley years.

2 - Crazy pills are only required if you want to suggest Torres is the best CAM in the pool. C'mon, man. Torres has seen a lot of bench and mediocre play for a bad struggler in his better league the last two seasons. Diskerud plays 90 every week and is currently the 19th rated player for the season by leading Norwegian paper VG. He is a Team of the Season candidate on a side hoping to finish second or better.

And Diskerud directly set up more goals in his first 15 minutes with the US than Torres has in all of his. Torres should not be starting games in our crowded midfield at this time. That's my stance.

You keep talking about inferior leagues. This is arbitrary when the issue is player form and performance. There is no reason at this time to place Torres ahead of Bedoya, let alone because of the league where they play. Bedoya has been increasingly smashing it in CM midfield for two seasons straight. And he's much tougher.

I still think Torres can have value as a winger. That's where he's had his best Pachuca success and I've yet to see anything from him in a US shirt that tells me he can play central midfield on an international level at this time.
