The newest 22

Answering Klinsi's call for the friendlies with Ecuador and Honduras will be the 22 USMNT gentleman below.

Do note both the inclusion of the latest German defector, Daniel Williams, and the confusing fact that he's been listed as a midfielder. Hmm. I do suppose his favored right back slot is rather crowded.

I'm becoming slightly dismayed that the boss is not exactly getting a look at a great number of players so far. And who is up next at left back? More Chandler? Spector? Orozco?

There's no excuse not to have one natural left back in every camp. We coach players now. I don't want to hear that they aren't up to level - bring them up to level.

G - Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

D - Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers), Timmy Chandler (FC Nürnberg), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Oguchi Onyewu (Sporting CP), Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis), Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls), Jonathan Spector (Birmingham City)

M - Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Chievo), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Jeff Larentowicz (Colorado Rapids), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), Daniel Williams (Hoffenheim)

F - Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), Jozy Altidore (AZ), DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Teal Bunbury (Sporting Kansas City), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy)

- Greg Seltzer

Just wondering how the MLS schedule effected GOnzo, John, Feilhaber for not getting called up?

Not looking good for Bedoya, but I guess he did just return to the line up. I can see why Gatt and Mix did not get called up as thy are still very young and raw.

Don't know about the Larentowicz call up though.

Greg Seltzer said...

Bedoya is just over a knock and fighting for his place at a new club.

I would also much rather see John (or Gonzalez) than more Orozco at RCB.

As for Benny, dunno.

Gatt and Mix and at the very end of their seasons fighting for big stuff.

I don't have a great problem with calling up Larentowicz, but it again seems very crowded in central midfield.

If I had a big beef, it would be no John.

Am I missing something about Orozco? Is he a better passer/defender than he has looked so far?

At least Castillo got the axe this time.

Any word on Goodson?

I still want to see John, Gonzo, Gatt, and Mixx.

Whats going on with Charlie Davies?
his loan is up at the end of MLS seasons right? or is it for two years?

If not is he returning to France in December?

As far as Orozco, this is getting annoying. Apparently George John now wants to play for Greece and I cant help but think maybe ala Rossi he thinks he gets no respect from the US coaching staff is going to do it out of anger.

I can answer the Charlie Davies question.

He is on a 1 year loan to DC United and DC has the option to purchase his contract if they so choose. I think they have seen enough to purchase it, but not 100% sure. He needs to be more consistent on a game to game basis and stop being so whiney sometimes.

*and is going to do it out of anger is what I meant to write

(this was reported in a Greek newspaper.

As far as Charlie Davies Strago, I was already assuming he wasnt wanted in Washington and was more interested if Greg knew if he will be back with the first team in France or sent to reserves or another loan.

What, so Fabian Johnson gets called up just long enough to file the paperwork, but gets ditched as soon as it goes through? What the shit, Klinsi? Must be super extra nice to see his teammate get called up instead.

No offense, but RM you seem to be assuming a lot. That John is pissed and feels like he's getting no respect and that United doesn't want Davies...
I don't think there's been any concrete reporting of any of that here in the US. And, Greek papers...? How do we know it isn't a tabloid or something (which report on sports there like they do on celebs here in the states)?
And, Davies leads DC in goals and at approx. $245,000 isn't that expensive compared to other players at 11 ish goals this season.

He is out with a neck injury

Well fishizzle my nizzle. I just read that myself. Daaaaang.

I don't think we should read too much in to call ups until the qualifiers start. I understand the comments about John and other MLSrs, but I think they will get their first and/or extended looks once the season is over. Like the January camp in the past. A lot of the players that would get called in are at the end of their season, will be in the playoffs and maybe even some regional comps. and could probably use the rest. In fact, it'd be nice to see Donovan left off this list--these games don't mean anything and he needs to start watching how many meaningless games he's putting on his legs.
I think, what Klinsman has been doing, is calling in new guys and letting them eliminate themselves--Castillo, etc. Otherwise, he wants to see how they have and will mix with the vets that have been called in intermittently over the past few friendlies. If they prove themselves, they stay. If not, they go. If there in the middle (Orozco) they may be getting another chance b/c of club issues, fitness, etc. with other players.
In each camp there has been a mix of veteran and new and it hasn't always been the same players from those categories. This is the same process he used with Germany and was criticized for. So, maybe we should be patient and wait on reacting to call-ups for a few more months, or a couple years even.
Essentially, what's the difference if John is called in for two meaningless games now or for a 6 week camp in two months after his season is over, possible transfers are negotiated and he's rested and ready to show his best?
Maybe he wants to see a Gooch/Orozco pairing before eliminating Orozco from the mix... What if that's the one that works? Why not see that before moving on to another player down the list--I mean, we have time.

What's the word on Williams? What does he bring?

And still no call up for Parkhurst.

Greg Seltzer said...

Yeah. But there are a lot of defenders to get through looking at. I'm more steamed about John because of the Greece element.

AWF08 said...

Yep. I get it--the Greece thing is worrying...
And, I'll admit, every time one of these comes up and Rolfe isn't included I see red for a minute (the kid was built to come in off the right or left of the front three in a 4-3-3). But, I try to think/hope there is a method to the madness.

Greg Seltzer said...

I'm hoping Rolfe is among the January call-ups, as Scandinavian-based players often are.

TrueCrew said...

Greg, I can't believe you are actually putting stock in where US Soccer lists a player.

They've been getting it wrong for years. Spector as a defender? Williams as a mid? I doubt both.

Beasley and Shea as forwards.

And for crying out loud, we aren't in a 4-3-3, it is a 4-5-1. Those guys track back WAY too much for wingers.

As for the top 5 charts, not much argument from me so far. Good stuff.
