Donovan dusts off "LandyCakes"

Let me show you the real reasons I like Landon Donovan, which have nothing to do with the soccer skills he will take up against New York in their tie decider on Thursday night: the guy is honest and he has an underrated propensity for not taking himself so seriously all the time. Considering his position in the US soccer bubble for the last decade, I'd say those are real feats.

Am I suggesting he deserves bonus personality points merely for not being unbearable as someone in his position? Yes, in a way, it seems I am.

Besides discussing his former nickname, Donovan also reveals in this interview that he'd love to be one of the overage Olympic selections next summer.

It stands to reason; if it is all about American soccer, Donovan is all about it. Always. You can set your watch to it, and I think sometimes this gets overlooked.

I don't follow you... what is the link supposed to indicate about Landon?

Refresh the page... I had the wrong link there initially. Fixed now.

I used to despise him, partly because he played for LA, partly because he washed out of Germany 3 times (4 if you count Bayern -- but I dont really because he wasnt given a fair shake), but I have grown to like the guy because of how well he has handled all of it. He's in a great place now and hopefully can reach his peak because I dont think he has yet.

He's good, I just wish the Steinbrenners would buy Everton so he can go over there this Winter. I just preferred watching him play with and against the better talent of the EPL.

^ Goddamnit. I'll be the MLS fan boy here and say "blow it out your ass". Donovan is Donovan no matter where he plays. If what you really want is to say "I'm a fan of the EPL, and not MLS," then say that. He's no better there and no worse here. FFS.

Here is my generic response to that MLS fanboy response:

Wanting Donovan to play at Everton in the EPL is not a slur against MLS. It's just not.

I know many feel it a putdown, but that's not true. That's my 2 cents on it.

And I think my point still stands. Donovan is no better in the EPL and no worse in MLS. Andy was using Donovan to illustrate a point about his viewing preferences, which is largely irrelevant to Donovan himself.

Greg Seltzer said...

I'm not sure that's the case that he's not better in the EPL. I think he is.

Greg Seltzer said...

Of course, much of that has to do with how he's used in LA and how he was used at Everton.

whoaaa sorry off topic, but alfredo morales is on the full usmnt roster for the november friendlies.

Do you Landon ever going back to the EPL? I thought he played some of his best soccer while at Everton and the months which followed.

He takes too many mental breaks in MLS. I mean, how can a guy like Landon get up to play the likes of the Crew or the Revs?

Tom said...

Gotcha--thanks. I'm in full agreement with you on LandyCakes. Personally I love the nickname *simply because* he's so overcome it in the last several years.

RM said... when is the moron finally going to call George John?

Alfredo Morales,is this serious?
(I think Klinnman said you had to be playing regular football..?)

Goodson and Orozco are completely
useless. Is it just me or are these callups getting increasingly bizarre?

RM said...

I thought Klinsman said*

(also from what i understand orozco has stopped playing as well.

Jon said...

Why the hell did Orozco and Rogers get called up, but not Gonzalez or Klejstan?

Anyone else losing faith in Klinsy? An average MLS winger over a solidified starter for Anderlecht? WTF?

Also nice to see Backe has now cost Juan his NT spot due to not playing him AT ALL.

RM said...

Klinsman is a joke. Agudelo didnt lose his spot due to lack of playing time. That really doesnt apply equally to all

take a look at Orozco and Morales they either never play or recently have stopped.

Jon said...

Klinsy specifically mentioned Juans club situation. Of course it comes into play. When Backe played him, he got called in. Now that Backe is being a dick, and not playing him, he doesn't get called up and Klinsy says he needs to figure out his club situation.

Juan needs a new club badly.

Greg Seltzer said...

Bradley pulled that bullshit, also. He'd talk about how one guy isn't playing... of course, that would not apply to everyone, only to certain cases.

If playing time/form is some great factor, Morales is not even close to there, while Kljestan would be.
