Let's hear it for the girls

On a day when the WPS suspends operations for 2012, let's check in with the USWNT following their CONCACAF Championship cruise past Canada last night. I'm wondering if some of these ladies won't be headed across the pond soon.

Alex Morgan is clearly the best player on the team. For a coach to not play her 90 because she prefers a different formation, is lazy. Find your best 11, play a formation that gets them all on the field.

If Morgan was on the field during the blistering start the US had vs. Japan, she probably nets 2 or 3. Rather than shoot wide or hit the post a la Cheney and Lloyd.

Totally off-topic, but it can't feel good if you're Houston to see Kris Boyd spurn you for Portland. Ouch.

I'd guess it was more about the locale than the team for him.

I should say, locale and/or climate.

Right: that's kind of my point. No one wants to live in Houston. It's like Los Angeles, but with 100% humidity. It's too bad, too, because Houston is one of the best run teams in the league.

Selfishly, though, I'm happy. Portland is a one hour flight from San Francisco, and I plan on getting up there to see that team and that stadium this season.

I wouldn't say she's the best player, she's very fast, and a sensational goal scorer, but Hope Solo and Wambach are legends, and players like Cheney and Rapinoe are highly undervalued for what they contribute.

However, she's a dynamite figure for Women's soccer, young, attractive, exciting, and deadly. The sport needs her now more than ever.

WPS! Fuuuuuuuuck.

Is this a death knell?

It's more like a wake. Not how they do it now, but the way they used to do them when they were actually waiting to see if the deceased would WAKE up.

Solo is a goalie. At some point, Hamm had to step aside for Wambach. Hamm was (is) a legend. I think the team is better with Wambach and Morgan up top. It is undefendable that way. Just Wambach up top makes it easy for a defense and requires quite a string of passes to create a chance.

Rapinoe, et al, can create a goal scoring chance with one pass to Morgan from anywhere. She is only getting better.

such a bummer than that the wps news comes on the heels of such an emphatic triumph.

greg, sorry to go off topic again..

kvc westerlo's team secretary said that edson buddle just left belgium and decided not to sign with the team. did he end up heading that way after all? any nibbles on where he's going?

Greg Seltzer said...

I can promise you he meant "just left" as in "suddenly up and left" and not as in "very recently left" because Buddle stopped by Westerlo for less than a day over a week ago.

I'm told he was not at all interested, and thus we can determine that the club were indulging in a bit of fantasy with their statements about him pondering their offer.

thanks greg, figured you'd know all the details.
