Uncertainty of the Stars

As with all things WPS, there is a degree of uncertainty regarding its two biggest stars. Abby Wambach told the Associated Press that she's still undecided as to whether or not she'll be playing stateside next season. Marta, the mercurial Brazilian forward, noted her European options as well.

For what it's worth, Wambach stated that American qualification for the 2012 Olympics was her top priority. And while Americans, especially the women, have shown some propensity to help grow the game domestically, Marta's loyalties lie with the currency of her choice. As virtuous as Wambach may be, being a female professional soccer player, no matter how iconic, doesn't exactly leave one rolling in the dough. She's 31 now and the right European offer could see her cross the Big Sink.

If I was a betting man, I'd put my money on Marta taking the money and running, with Wambach waiting until after the Olympics to cash in. Both players, along with Hope Solo, were up for FIFA's Ballon d'Or yesterday, awarded to Japan's Homare Sawa.
