The USWNT Moment of Truth - first 2012 edition

I've never really cottoned to the phrase "on like Donkey Kong" - but if you insist, go ahead. Pia Sundhage has named the 20 ladies responsible for punching the USWNT's Olympic ticket, with CONCACAF qualifying set to kick off Friday in Vancouver against the Dominican Republic.

And as you can see, there is plenty of talent available for WPS pick-up.

G - Nicole Barnhart (out of contract), Hope Solo (out of contract)

D - Rachel Buehler (Atlanta Beat), Ali Krieger (FFC Frankfurt), Amy LePeilbet (Atlanta Beat), Heather Mitts (out of contract), Kelley O’Hara (Atlanta Beat), Christie Rampone (out of contract), Becky Sauerbrunn (Sky Blue FC)

M - Shannon Boxx (out of contract), Tobin Heath (out of contract), Lori Lindsey (Western New York Flash), Carli Lloyd (Atlanta Beat), Heather O’Reilly (Boston Breakers), Megan Rapinoe (out of contract), Amy Rodriguez (out of contract)

F - Lauren Cheney (out of contract), Sydney Leroux (Atlanta Beat), Alex Morgan (Western New York Flash), Abby Wambach (out of contract)

I'm not all that familiar with the contract side of the women's game but is it common to have that many players out of contract?

It's not especially common, however many of these players were on the roster for magicJack (nee Washington Freedom) when it had it's WPS franchise terminated.

This is a unique situation that may play out very strangely. A judge recently ruled that WPS failed to follow it's own conflict resolution rules in the process of the termination, so... maybe it'll be reinstated, and maybe those players will have a club again.
