The Genoa Job

As Greg promised, here are those USMNT roster changes:

In: Sacha Kljestan, Brek Shea

Out: Landon Donovan, Jermaine Jones, Jose Torres, Timmy Chandler

Keep your eyes open, too. Further moves could be on the way today.

Nothing to be too worried about with Landon, I'd hope. I'm hearing bronchitis, which, judging by Liverpool's lovely weather, should clear up once he spends a few days sucking down those SoCal rays. But injuries waylaid the other three, with Jones (calf), Chandler (hamstring) and Torres (hamstring) killing depth. That takes some of the starch out of this one. Would love to finally see Landon and Dempsey on the field together under Klinsmann.

Nice to see Brek get another crack. And finally Sacha gets another look. Even if it took injuries to nearly half the call-ups to get it. Jeez, Jurgi. Belgium has a real league, y'know, and Anderlecht is in it.

Who else do you reckon might be in line for a call up?

I can't really see anyone else being flown over from the States on such short notice, but I wouldn't really be shocked to see Eric Lichaj get the call due to our lack of depth at fullback or Zak Whitbread, who is now healthy again.

It would be great to see Whitbread in there. He looked great this weekend despite just coming back from injury!

lichaj makes sense, as cover for chandler. good call jamie.

I'd be surprised if Whitbread gets a nod considering his recent past.

It'd be nice to see a fullback called up for cover, but would anybody be surprised if Klinsmann ended up sticking Fabian Johnson back there? I'd rather he not, but I'd put a small stash of money on it.

Sure, it'd be no surprise if Johnson started at left back, but even if he were to get the nod, we're sure short of cover at fullback.

Lichaj hasn't been getting first-team minutes, but he's been playing (and scoring) with the reserves and has national team experience. What are our other options at fullback?

Then again, it's altogether possible we don't call anyone else in.

hey, maybe they will put fabian at left back, we will lose, and greg will come on and tell us all how right he was. then coach klinsmann can make chili vice assistant #1 for all propoganda.

My starter picks with the assembled crew:

--------Altidore---------
Dempsey--------------Shea
---------Kljestan--------
-------------Bradely-----
---------Edu-------------
Williams-------------Dolo
-------Boca---Goodson----

reasoning:
Shea: In a couple of friendlies Shea's played the winger swap in mid game, I thought it was alright. He knows the role. I think he and Dolo could own the right side, all the way to the attacking corner, together.
Dempsey: Makes a living here for Fulham
Williams: Makes a living here for Hoffenheim
Bradley: Has the motor and d-skills to be the box/box mid
Kljestan: Is making assists and scoring goals, let him try it here.

apparently those on the ground are reporting a backline of johnson-boca-goodson-dolo practicing together.

Whoops. I mean Johnson at LB. The guy who LB for Hoffenheim, not Williams.
