I have more on the way soon, but let's begin breaking down the remaining transfer situations of interest with the curious case of Sporting KC's Honduras ace Roger Espinoza. His agent confirmed to me yesterday that UK rag favorite Wigan are indeed in talks for his client.
However, even with his contract up at year's end, we should not simply hand him over to the Latics just yet (Kansas City surely won't). We've also previously heard of widespread interest in Spain, but that's just the iceberg's tip. It turns out there is another EPL team right on Wigan's heels. I have a fair idea who that is, but let's not mix the unconfirmed with the straight skinny.
What's more, clubs from Denmark, the Netherlands, Portugal and Turkey are somewhere in the frame. A portion of the clubs chasing Espinoza are trying to nab him now, while others are hoping to grab him on a freebie in January.
As for Wigan, I think they'd be happy with either scenario unfolding, so long as they get him. The shared fact that Espinoza would prefer a move to England is working in their favor a large extent. Still, my educated guess is if they don't make it happen now, someone much dreamier will snap him up this winter. And frankly, with Wigan, that's a bit of a low bar.
So what are the chances Espinoza leaves KC now? Hard to say, but I do know he would be content to see out the MLS Cup chase with Sporting before jetting off.
