This Just In - Part Deuce (updated)

Everyone with a major news outlet and their mother are now reporting that Clint Dempsey has shown up at Spurs Lodge to complete a transfer. And now we all know the identity of the London side I've been telling you all along was watching silently in wait. Truth be told, though... I kinda figured it was Arsenal.

So, how is everyone doing out there? Who needs a drink?

UPDATE: By the way, that now makes it an even dozen Americans in the two UEFA group stages this time year. I will have an updated Honor Roll post over the weekend.

UPDATE UPDATE: As it turns out, Arsenal did also made calls about Deuce this week. Booyah.

LAST UPDATE EVER ON THIS DAMN TOPIC
: Official-ness.

WOW.... can't wait to see how all of this unfolded, Greg. For now, at least Deuce gets to stay in London - and play with Dembele. Levy, you sly old dog. Man, I was dead convinced he was going to LFC. I wonder if Clint was too, until 2 hours ago. Hopefully we'll find out but for now, glad to see his situation resolved at a top club.

Cody Cropper to Southampton? Who is Cody Cropper?

@Matt, http://lmgtfy.com/?q=cody+cropper

I really hope this Spurs deal is for real. I was less than enthused about Clint to Liverpool.

Awesome! Any word from the blogs if they're still in the race for Moutinho? Last I saw, he flew with Porto for their next match. Tottenham would be a top 4 side IMO.

Thanks, Jon.

Re: Dempsey, this isn't a done deal, right? Or is it?

I bet a bid was LFC was approved but Spurs sniped it last minute, LFC then hesitated, and the exasperated CD had to move forward with Spurs. Not that it's a bad thing. LFC are going to be a work in progress for a little while, and Clint is not getting any younger.

Care to divulge the Italian side you hinted at a month ago?

....Napoli is my bet.

Greg Seltzer said...

I can't be sure. It was either Milan, Juve or Napoli - probably in that order of likelihood.

Anyone now want Boca out of the national team?

What a horrible choice. Santander are probably going to the 3rd division!!!

Onyewu transfer is excellent.

Dan Levy is really, really good at his job.

I called it here on NSC on August 6th.

Which clearly makes me the awesomest.

"Jon Carter: ESPN understands that the fee Fulham wanted for Dempsey from Liverpool was higher than that they accepted from Spurs or Villa."

Heh heh heh.

Greg--how's Dempsey fit in? Competing with Lennon? Floating behind Adebayor/Defoe? Van der Vaart played too far back for it to be a direct replacement, right? Seems like the natural spot in their system is where Bale plays--that's not happening...

Think he fills the void of Van der Vaart. He could also make Defoe a substitute, which IMO he's best at anyway.

i dont know, he is going to a team for less than the valuation which fulham set, and its a team that is not in champions league.

not to mention two players named luka and rafael no longer on the team. how long is it before bale ditches?

on the bright side he does get to play with dembele and probably some new january signings. we will see how avb treats our boy. personally, i rate portuguese affection towards american players as that on par with the french, probably slightly above.

could we not have just forgotten about the deuce saga, knowing it was going to go down to the wire. today was a fun day and looking back, it is reasonable to now assume that this thing could have gone down any number of ways.

everyone like to throw out these absolute statements and really most of it is conjecture and even a team as lowly as aston villa can come in at the last minute and present a decent offer, from out of left field.

personally, im not so against british press like some people. you take this stuff for what it is worth and verification from multiple sorces is always good journalism anyway.

it really comes down to how deuce does perform over the next couple of weeks and his country needs him.

Spurs boards all think he is worse than VDV, which is idiotic. Anyone who has watched VDV play in the last 18 months knows he has lost it. In the Euros he was terrible, for the Spurs he was mediocre.

This is what I dont like about Spurs fans, they think Llorys is a top 5 goal keeper because someone told them he is the top 5. They think VDV is still the best midfielder because he's dutch. Why are people so gullible? Llorys was torched at the euros on relatively easy plays.

Meanwhile, Deuce scores against Italy, Brazil, Chelsea, hell he's regularly torched the spurs going back three years when he scored and had two assists in one game.

you look at tottenhams lineup today, they have adebayor and dembele on the bench. deuce is going to have to work hard for playing time, which should obviously be expected at a bigger club.

clint has logged 3300 and 3100 minutes over the past couple season and a reduction in those numbers will be a benefit to his national team career.

of course geoff cameron goes 93, 120, and is now starting for stoke, all in one week, and edu is on the bench.
