We have a Gooch sighting.

The La Liga debut of Málaga defender Oguchi Onyewu could finally be near after the US defender scored the opener for the first team in a 4-1 training win over the reserves on Thursday. Obviously, there is no video of this goal - but I figure you're all more interested to learn he's getting practice time with the starters anyway.

greg, ot, what do you think about this jenn e. cheng story about the lfc blogger?

Greg Seltzer said...

You are going to need to clue me in, I have no idea what you're referring to.

dikranovich said...

its a story at tsg.com about liverpool, e-cheng, and some british blogger,

dikranovich said...

its probably bs

Ben Taylor said...

It's not BS. http://duncanjenkins.blogspot.com/ http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/cctv-footage-shows-liverpool-pr-1381872 read up mates. crazy story

Greg Seltzer said...

That's some wacky stuff alright.

dikranovich said...

i never did trust e-cheng and his secret sources.

Alex Larsen said...

so THATS why youve stayed off twitter greg...

dikranovich said...

alex, this is not some story about greg and his reasons for not engaging social media. please dont lose sight of the bigger picture.

Greg Seltzer said...

I'm fairly sure he was making a joke. But now you have me curious... what is the big picture?

dikranovich said...

the big picture would be something with regards to jenn changs resume over the past five years and how it relates to soccer here in america.

brian said...

is this the same jenn chang who writes for espn soccer?

Mike said...

Yes, he took a job working in public relations(?) or something similar with Liverpool.

@greg- Would love to see who you think will get called in to the January camp?

Greg Seltzer said...

I will do something with that after the Russia friendly, Mike.

Mike said...

Nevermind, looks like the camp might get called off. ( http://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/US-soccer-to-play-exhibition-at-Russia-on-Nov-14-3962438.php )

Maybe he will just want everyone to go on loans or practice with Euro teams as he has always stated everyone needs to keep playing

Greg Seltzer said...

Over time, people say lots of things.

dikranovich said...

greg, hypothetically, if usa had to choose a new coach today, who would you pick?

Greg Seltzer said...

I'm not playing that game. Next thing I know, every one will claim I want Klinsmann fired.

Mike said...

that is very true, especially with JK. I thought he actually said he was wanting to have a more U23 camp in January which would be nice to see.

Random question for anyone:What type of ceiling do Austin Berry and Hedges have? I have watched Berry a lot and like him but not sure how he would translate against better teams. Just curious on peoples thoughts

Mike said...

@dikranovich- Who would your top 3 be? Please make them realistic too

dikranovich said...

id choose bruce arena, maybe sigi schmid. i like kreis and olsen too, very much, but they are not ready yet. dom kinnear? maybe, probably. how bout the former chilean coach from argentina, he might be good.

i know, you can say it, you would want frank rijkaard

dikranovich said...

mike, i think the idea of ceilings is a false notion which is designed to keep soccer down in america. where is eddie johnsons "ceiling"?

Mike said...

@dikranovich- So you would like the next coach to be American. I can definitely see a Kreis, Kinnear,or Sigi getting interviewed for the job. Will definitely be a fun time whenever that comes around. I am looking forward to the day that more American coaches coach overseas or in Mex/S.America.

- I guess the term ceiling probably isn't the best way to describe someone, but as they are rookies I was more of the less wanting to know what they are good and bad at.

dikranovich said...

marcelo bielsa would not be a bad choice for me. really the question to greg was posed to find out who in a pinch should be called in. at this point in qualifying, usa would have to call in a coach with the experience.

Tony M said...

I know who I would chose (if I could wave a magic wand): David Moyes

Smart, well organized teams that he gets the most out of and has a proven affinity for US players. To me it would be like taking the best qualities of the an American coach like Bradley with big league experience.

brian said...

greg, can you do a top 10 of the most ridiculous comments from dik? i think that would be hilarious for all!

Alex Larsen said...

It was most definitely a joke, I don't know how you could have gotten any "big picture" idea from it.

dikranovich said...

alex, my friend, the big picture, does not emanate from your comments about greg not engaging on twitter, please.

Alex Larsen said...

ok....then why did you bring it up?

dikranovich said...

alex, because it is an interesting bit of news and a little fact checking shows that this guy only took the job this past june. so it has taken him a whole five months to get into deep water. not to mention that a failed bid on dempsey and some miscommunications, from the director of communications, lead to that little snafu.

this is big news and im pretty sure that at one point, e-chang was working in some regard within us soccer, under sunil gulati. two economist trying so desperately to forge their creative vision.

it must have been changs vision that convinced another brick in the wahl that it would be a good idea to run for fifa president and go out on the streets of LA and ask total strangers what they thought of his bold ideas.

Alex Larsen said...

ok...and what does any of that have to do with greg not engaging on twitter and/or my joke about greg not engaging on twitter?

dikranovich said...

absolutely nothing alex!!!

dikranovich said...

big moment in the sheffield wed. v leeds game at hillsborough. should be a doozy of a final ten minutes

Alexi Lalas ‏@AlexiLalas

Talked to @J_Klinsmann. Says Jan. #USMNT camp will happen. Shorter version. Less players. Geared to those who may help w/ Feb. hex games.

Matt said...

@Dikran: You have a lot of time on your hands to spend on the Internet.

@dikranovich: Why are you talking about replacing Klinsmann? He is going nowhere and is doing a very good job helping the team reach the next level, also stop mentioning Arena he is never coming back to coach the USMNT it's time to move on.

dikranovich said...

@420+9b1d1c3po, coach always needs a fire burning just under his backside. the best motivation for someone is knowing that people are right behind you waiting to take your place. people become complacent when they know their job is safe. coach klinsmann IS doing a good job, but he could also do much better. much, much better.

the #10 player really has to know how to distribute the ball. its like once the ball is at their feet, they already know where it is going next. if you dont have that skill set, you really cant be a number ten.

im willing to concede that jet lag could have had a negative effect on deuces game yesterday. it seems plausible. lets see what the field master does today with roma.
