Here's a fun little episode for all those stuck at work or school. You probably know that Michael Parkhurst and FC Nordsjælland are hosting Shakthar Donetsk in the Champions League, with their hopes of European knockout soccer in the new year already very slim.
So... the hosts took a 1-0 lead, but near the half hour, it got kooky. Following a brief injury clean-up, an dropball restart that Shakhtar were meant to simply kick back lazily to FCN in the standard manner was sneakily scooped up downfield by Luiz Adriano. He raced, onside, past the stunned Wild Tigers defenders to score the equalizer. I can't know for sure, of course, but it kiiiinda looked as if he planned to do it all along.
After several minutes of heated discussion over the incredible lapse, it seemed Shakhtar would stand down to let Nordsjælland regain the one-goal lead - for a moment. As play restarted, the visitors appeared to step aside at first, only to quickly scoop up the ball and try an attack move. he hosts then dropped the trusting attitude and immediately charged down the field to score the 2-1.
The moral of the story: RAWR, suckas. I can't wait for the post-game interviews.
UPDATE: Urgh. Somewhat undercutting my story, Shakhtar leveled before the break and have gone on to take a 4-2 lead into the final quarter hour. Frankly though, I think they still owe one from those shady antics.
UPDATE UPDATE: See it all for yourself.
