The Perestroika 20 (updated)

For those keeping score, Jurgen Klinsmann called up 14 of my earlier "selections" - not half bad considering he also named fewer players then I did on my wishlist. I'm not certain as to why Michael Parkhurst isn't in the squad, but I'd imagine it has to do with FC Nordsjælland's killer upcoming schedule.

Also, unlike some may be, I am not opposed to the Agudelo call-up. I am opposed to a tiny defensive stable that's two-thirds made of natural midfielders. With the Altidore soap opera apparently resolved, this trend has become my new great concern.

G - Tim Howard (Everton), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

D - Carlos Bocanegra (Racing Santander), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Timmy Chandler (FC Nürnberg), Maurice Edu (Stoke City), Clarence Goodson (Brøndby), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim)

M - Michael Bradley (AS Roma), Mikkel Diskerud (Rosenborg), Joshua Gatt (Molde FK), Joe Gyau (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim)

F - Juan Agudelo (Chivas USA), Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna), Herculez Gomez (Santos Laguna)

UPDATE: We have some squad comments from the boss.

My biggest problem is that Agudelo is the only MLS field player on the roster. There are some pretty good players who are done with their season already.

I know that he can look at a lot of the guys in Jan, but what a great opportunity to see how they would react in an unfamilar setting. That's a big reason of why you schedule friendlies.

@Phil

Klinsy didn't call any MLS guys that made the playoffs except Rimando. Probably wants to give them a well-deserved rest.

Finally seeing a big of a youth movement, which is encouraging.

It's pretty weird not seeing Dempsey's name on the roster. Kinda surprised no Dolo or Guzan.

Jolazo - I can appreciate that, but didn't Klinsmann say that the MLS season isn't long enough and that players should be playing more months out of the year?

He says a lot of things that he doesn't necessarily back up with his selections.

But I'm guessing his thinking was that it would be a pain in the ass to have U.S. based field players fly 8 to 10 hours to Russia for a 2 day camp. And if that's what he was thinking, I can't fault the logic.

Great post title. You could make t-shirts if we ever play Russia in a meaningful game and make a boatload off of them. The Perestroika 23 has a great ring to it...

And whatever happened to Alfredo Morales? This time last year he was the second coming of Christ in soccer cleats.

Things have changed with MLS. This season is not over until December now for the playoff teams .

@Matt: Morales is still playing for Hertha BSC in the 2.Bundesliga, with John Anthony Brooks. Brooks has played ten matches and 640 minutes so far this season, while Morales has played exactly zilch. Curiously, Hertha's website lists Morales as an American, and Brooks as a German.

i like the wikipedia version better, that has them both as americans.

I am entirely unsurprised. Selective truths? You and Wikipedia are made for each other.
