Generation adidas-splosion

Worth noting today that center backs Walker Zimmerman (Furman) and Andrew Farrell (Lousiville) are officially Generation adidas players. Farrell is a huge get as one of the presumptive top picks in the upcoming draft, though it seems unlikely TFC will keep it after they snapped up vagabond defender Gale Agbossoumonde in a weighted lottery they won over closest chasers FCD this week. Toronto also has the third pick, so I'd expect the Reds to deal the #1 for some change soon.

As far as Agbossoumonde, whose young professional career has already taken several bizarre and unfortunate dovetails, here's an interesting look at him from earlier this year when he was in soccer purgatory with the RailHawks.

Farrell is a stout stopper, but Zimmerman should makes some waves in MLS too. The only knock on him is that he's young and relatively unrefined, but his raw size and athleticism should have a number of developmentally-minded franchises drooling. He scored five times this year for Furman, which you'll remember from Clint Dempsey's days there. If Farrell is the top defender in the 2013 draft, Zimmerman is close behind. Here's a quick prospectus on the big guy from Waking the Red.

As a side note, there's still some static as to whether Indiana forward Eriq Zavaleta will be offered a GA contract. Big, big mistake by adidas if they miss on Zavaleta, whose ceiling is, in my opinion, as high as any forward in this pool. He's something of a big-game goal machine.

And all this came on the heels of LA's signing of CSU-Bakersfield forward Gyasi Zardes to a homegrown contract. This was a huge get for the Galaxy, who were thought to be in the conversation for Zardes' signature before last season before he decided to head back to Bakersfield for another year. Unlike another SoCal stud under center for USC, Zardes helped his stock considerably by staying when he upped his strike tally to 33 goals in 37 games. At 21 he's a signing for the future, but with the space available up top on the first team it's possible Zardes could make an impact sooner than expected.

Also of random interest - the Galaxy are reportedly close on securing Spurs keeper Carlo Cudicini. So there's that.
