It's on like annual January Donkey Kong.

I have no idea what the title means. It was a late Saturday night out. What I do know is Jurgen Klinsmann has named the 25 January camp attendees.

I'm not surprised but a little disappointed not to see Steve Clark called. I'm a little confused to see De La Garza called, since we last heard he was going to play for Guam. The Morales call is also a bit curious, but I'm especially happy to see Davis and Parke included.

Just from a first glance, I'm thinkin' something like: Johnson; Beitashour, Gonzalez, Besler, Morrow; Beckerman, Diskerud, Feilhaber; Gatt, Johnson, Zusi. Of course, that could change in five minutes' time.

Fair warning, though: I spy a handful of players that could conceivably end up skipping camp to complete a move. And there's a couple names that might be missing for the same reason.

G - Tally Hall (Houston Dynamo), Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire)

D - Steven Beitashour (San Jose Earthquakes), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Matt Besler (Sporting KC), A.J. DeLaGarza (L.A. Galaxy), Omar Gonzalez (L.A. Galaxy), Connor Lade (New York Red Bulls), Alfredo Morales (Hertha Berlin), Justin Morrow (San Jose Earthquakes), Jeff Parke (Philadelphia Union)

M - Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Helsingborg - free agent), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg - free agent), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Benny Feilhaber (Sporting KC), Joshua Gatt (Molde FK), Graham Zusi (Sporting KC)

F - Juan Agudelo (Chivas USA), Will Bruin (Houston Dynamo), Edson Buddle (Colorado Rapids), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

- Greg Seltzer

Zusi and Agudelo are already scheduled to miss the first week due to their training stints at West Ham. I expect that Gonzalez is having a handful of conversations with his agent this month, as well, in so much as he's in the last year of his contract. Mix and Bedoya, obviously, are shipping their share of text messages as well.

If Morales isn't on the shopping/shipping block at Hertha, I'm a sack of unbleached flour.

On the whole, this is a less surprising roster than I was hoping for -- Morrow, Lade, and Beltran the only remaining unexpecteds. That said, it's a surprisingly strong squad. The only MLS players left out that I could have hoped for would be Chris Rolfe, Austin Berry, and Nick DeLeon. Some folks will hop on one foot, red-faced, steam pouring out of their ears, furious that George John was left out yet again, but, hey, it's not like he's done a damn thing for himself since he utterly failed to move to England. Shea, as well, could probably use the time away from the team.

Has anything ever come of Osvaldo Alonso's effort to sever his ties to Cuba in the eyes of our benevolent FIFA overlords?

I meant also to say that DeLaGarza's inclusion is a bit weird -- he's clearly not going to play center back for the nats -- and feels like a roster pad to me. Not enough fullbacks? "Eh, lets throw a bone to AJ. He can't really want to play for Guam, can he?"

Chris Pontius just tweeted that he pulled out of the camp cuz his groin wasn't 100%

Suprised that Greg's partiality for Heath Pearce failed to be noted in the post. (Unless Pearce has a move in the works and avoided the camp.) To support Greg, it is odd Pearce isn't in the side: the left back position could always use more competition, and though Pearce has not shown enough ability to lock down left back, a player with 35 (!) caps and a pretty good record in internationals should be included on this list.

@ Paul: I gave up for sounding like a broken record. The whole thing is beyond me. I just don't get it.

Alan Gordon, Sapong, and Shea are the three that I would have expected to be on there but aren't.

No, and likely nothing ever will. The only way he could conceivable become eligible would be if Cuba stripped his citizenship, which they haven't.

i tell you though, you look at the midfield and there is a lot of quality in there.

hopefully we will see a good five man midfield against canada and get maybe davis, feilhaber, and zusi, supported by beckerman and mix.

i will pray that we see this midfield against canada.

jolazo, alan gordon is out injured, and i think no cj sapong, that adds credence to some transfer rumors.

If CJ Sapong moves to Arsenal I will cut off my own legs, grind them down into burgers and serve them at a church picnic to orphan children. That rumor is total bullshit, and everyone knows it.

I would've liked to see Dax thrown in.

I was really hoping to see Kitchen called in. He's going to be part of the team in the future, it'd be nice to get him some exposure to the senior program.

Surprised no Austin Berry.

Jay, I think you are on safe ground there, and i hope for the sake of your future mobility, I hope you are right. But if, just IF, he does sign with Arsenal...you're going to post it to youtube, right?

It's a crying shame Pontius is still injured. The way I see it, he's the most exciting US attacking player to emerge this season in MLS, (we already knew about Wondo). He can play up top or on either flank, and is skilled, strong, and accurate.

Gotta be honest, but expected a little more from the Philly Union contingent. Not Adu so much as Okugo, Mcinerny, and the Sheanomenon. Good to know JK rates Parke highly, though.

Jay Eychaner said...

@Tony -- absolutely. And I'll make sure to film all those orphans hearing the full story... just as soon as they've finished their dinners.

Don't get DeLeon's exclusion at all.

Okay, legit question time: why only invite 25/26 players to this camp? Why not invite 32? Is that an excessive number of players for small side games and workouts?
