Cup o' Jozy (updated)

Apparently intent on leading the KNVB Cup inscoring this year, Jozy Altidore nodded the 74th minute winner away to semifinal derby hosts Ajax and added another with a long caught-out keeper lob in stoppage time to cap a 3-0 win. If that wasn't enough, he also deftly set up the late second. If you're keeping score at home, he now leads the tourney goal chart with seven (and has 23 across all competition).

We have an early look at the first goal, but I will switch out for full highlights when that surfaces...

UPDATE: We have both goals now, but I will still make the aforementioned switch later.

UPDATE UPDATE: Here is the hero's postgame TV chat.

Highlights: 02/27/2013 Jozy Altidore vs Ajax from Every Touch Football on Vimeo.

four points out of the relegation playoff, seven points from the europa playoff. a dutch cup win for AZ would be nice.

time for jozy to move on. he should go back to england and prove himself. now that french football is working so closely with MLS, we have a chance to get an american to arsenal. he probably goes to newcastle though, and we just have to hope he fairs better there than gooch.

How in the world could you possibly make such a ridiculous statement as "he probably goes to Newcastle"? That's like announcing your neighbor's 8-year old will probably go to Brown.

But good on Jozy. I hope he continues to "fair" well over the rest of the season and is able to transfer that success to his performances with the national team.

well jamie, newcastle just lost a big forwrd in demba ba, and they will be looking for a new one come this summer.

its a team that spends money and they have a good core of players.

brown is ivy league, do you really consider newcastle at that stature mr T?

this jozy case is about logic. the real question might be, where is he not going to be playing next season?

you have to put AZ alkmaar on the list of teams he will not be playing for bext season. this is a provincial club and they are going to strike while the iron is hot, plus there is little chance of them even making europe next season.

he is not going to man u, or citeh, or chelsea, those we know for sure. we should at least be hoping he does not go to one of those three teams, certainly not one season before the 2014 world cup.

tottenham, maybe, they sell bale, they sell another forward, and maybe. liverpool, would be nice, but no, everton would be great, but they dont have the cash. wba, no. stoke, that would be sweet, if the pulis love affair continues, it becomes more plausable.

the bottom three are out, as are new teams coming up. this is not like jozys hull experience, because he is more elite now.

west ham, he could do worse than sam allyrdce, but the gut and the logic say, if he goes to england, newcastle are the front runner for his services.

Little chance of making Europe???

Dude, they are in the cup final against the current league leaders. I'd say they have a fair shot.

I don't even know where to start. You know what? Nevermind. My fault for even saying anything.

good point greg, my bad. yet, they are still a provincial team and big money comes for jozy and he is gone. why is that some mystery?

Good to see the Department of Misinformation and Conjecture is well represented today.

And, man, that has to be a really bad feeling for that keeper. To KNOW for about 2 seconds that you are completely beat before being confirmed that, yes, you got caught napping. Badly.

Greg Seltzer said...

Yeah, he had a bad night.

matthew, wouldnt you say the ajax defender who gifted the ball to AZ was pretty culpable on the goal? great goal from jozy, that shot takes composure and confidence.

See Greg, if you were on Twitter you would have seen that Jozy's highlights were posted hours ago: https://vimeo.com/60693718

Big fan of your blog. Thanks for posting the Every Touch videos!

ok, i understand, think bigger. ok, ok! how about a german club, set to lose its star striker. this club has past relations with american striker and players who have played with americans, and bosnian-american who plays for serbia. a nice club.

and greg, is this the second time this season jozy has bagged a brace against ajax. that always gets the club president asking why he is not on his team.

You should mention that Jozy also had that gorgeous assist on the 2nd goal. What a perfectly weighted pass!

@Every Touch Football: a) your site rules; b) keep harping on Greg about Twitter. We will break him.

How exciting is this? This much - I'm letting myself imagine a Jozy-led mutiny against Klinsy this year that totally begins a new era for the USMNT. Sure, that's nonsense and delusional and silly talk - but dang, this does my heart good.

over there said...

That was absolutely SICK. The pass even more than the two goals. USMNT fans, our boy is all growed up!!! Gotta love this kid.

I think he leaves AZ, but I'd love to see him at Fiorentina. I think he can develop his deficiencies better in Serie A than in England, which would play more to his strengths. Either way, I just hope he goes somewhere else where he can PLAY. And I wouldn't cry if that was at PSV, Twente, or Ajax.

Soccertes said...

Bernardinho,

What sort of mutiny did you have in mind? The kind where the players actually play to their ability on a consistent basis? I agree, that would be sweet.

Erik said...

I was thinking of a mutiny where we played a creative midfielder and two really fast wingers that can feed Jozy the ball. You know, presuming we don't need 3 defensive minded/two-way midfielders at all times.

@ ETF & Matt:

If I ever joined Twitter, the first thing I would do is publicly challenge Chris Brown to no choreo, NO biting battle. And then I'd whooop his silly ass in front of TMZ.

So, yeeees, it would be good for something.

@ Erik:

From your comment to Klinsi's ears...

Matt said...

Greg: Please join. I'd happily watch Chris Brown endure any form of ass-whopping.

Bernardinho said...

Yes and yes, Soccertes and Erik. My feeling's that our Cup roster needs to be young as hell, and that a formation change should naturally coincide with that. Isn't now the time to make that happen? Or do such things tend to wait until the start of the Cup year?

dikranovich said...

can we end the twitter talk please? every freaking day with the joining twitter bs. its to the point of grovelling now. please!

Matt said...

@dik: Don't fight the future, man. New media, 'tis here to stay.

dikranovich said...

matthew, you are right, any idiot can use twitter. i of course have a hard time with it, but thats besides the point.

but you are still grovelling like a little drama queen.
