Soccer + Truthiness = Awesome
After Steven Colbert "reported" on the latest soccer fixing scandal on Wednesday night, he sat down with Alexi Lalas for a little chat on the topic and the sport.
absolutely brilliant from alexi!!! they only thing that would have been better, is if he stuck his foot in that pricks face and said, is this fake. maybe he should not have called him a boob, or doob. did he say doosh, or doob?
My gut feeling watching that last night is that Cobert is not a fan. He usually has subtle ways of letting us in on the joke, but I didn't sense that here. At least he had Alxi on, the only major US soccer personaility not too stiff to go toe to toe with him
Alexi is great for the sport. He's articulate, very willing to spar verbally, and is outspoken in a manner that isn't alienating. He's learned to play the role of television commentator in a way that no other US soccer pundit has, and is able to present his passion for the game and it's development in such a light as to be appropriately mainstream.
very well articulated aunt esther, although he did tell colbert it takes superior intellect to understand the game. at least you got the faith part going for ya. ohh, elizabeth, im coming to join ya. ohhh...
personally though matthew, i think alexi has been the voice of soccer in this country since the day he stepped onto the national scene. back in 1993. dont look now, thats twenty years ago.
Good outing for Alexi. Didn't go in too hard for the insipid Colbert shtick; gave the classic anti-soccer fans, voiced by Colbert, a bit of a run. Unfortunately, when he had a chance to comment about the 0-0 score line, and draw the same conclusion about baseball or hockey, Colbert went to commercial. Solid work for the game. (One certainly cannot say the same thing for Colbert's contribution to American comedy.)
Colbert isn't a fan. Personally, I don't care, because he brings up soccer on the show, including giving a nod to the Spain confederation's cup win. He might not watch soccer, but at least he respects it enough to give it air time and some genuine attention. That's more than can be said for most news sources, satirical or not.

You do realize that Colbert is playing a satirical character on the show, right?
oh, he is a soccer fan then? i did not detect that
That, I do not know. Jon Stewart is a huge soccer fan, played some college ball.
i was going to say, i forgot, john stewart played at W&M. colbert cant be that much of a doosh about it, but really, he probably is

ahh, he could have shown another brick in the wahl interviewing people on the streets of LA regarding his failed attempt to run for fifa president.
I really love that Alexi has become such a voice for our sport. He's fantastic.
