Jozy Altidore has just bagged his (new American record) 18th Eredivisie goal of the season and (new American record - part deux) 25th of the campaign to give AZ a shot at catching Ajax. On 73 minutes, the power forward got loose in the left channel and slotted home to get his side back in at 3-2.

Speaking of 4-3-3s...Rarely have I seen a team that shoots itself in the foot more than AZ this season. Oh we've got a title-contending team? Better sell off half of our outstanding players and replace them with nobodies. Oh we've got a great goal scorer in Altidore? Better make sure the service he gets is spotty at best most of the game. If AZ could actually play defense they wouldn't be so far down the table. Altidore playing where he actually might get decent service? Can't wait.
Is that 5 goals against Ajax this year now?
@ Brooks: I'd say Jozy had "decent" service up until Martens went down. But yeah, AZ did not exactly go for new youngsters at the potential level of the ones who left. For instance, I don't think anyone could be confused into thinking Berghuis will eventually match the play of Elm.
@ Jolazo: Yup.

Greg: Or Poulsen could be matched by Wijnaldum. Take away Altidore, Beerens and Maher from this AZ team and it's very, very pedestrian. It's ironic to me that when Altidore goes wide to collect a ball, his service into the area is usually better than what he gets when he's on the receiving end. Of course please take my comments with a healthy dose of salt, I'm exceptionally biased when I watch AZ games because I only tune in to see Jozy score...
I don't think Poulsen counts, he left on a freebie. I'm talking about the guys they got good money for.
But yes, Altidore's crosses are very often better than the ones he gets.
I mean Elm, Holman, Poulsen, Wernbloom, Moisander sold and Martens injured? AZ should thank its lucky stars for Altidore's break-out season.
Oh, didn't realize Poulsen went for free.
Holman went for free as well. Glad to see Jozy knock another one in. Heard about any new European clubs scouting Jozy recently, Greg?
Question for Greg or those of you with access - what does the Dutch punditry think of Altidore and his play this year? Is he getting recognized or is it the usual American-in-Europe-cold-shoulder?
He is being well-recognized, seems a very good bet to make the Team of the Season.
