Early roster surprise!

Be forewarned: the unconfirmed word is that Brooks will only be available for the Costa Rica match. I also think that no less than 18 of these players will be on your 2014 World Cup team.

G - Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

D - DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Matt Besler (Sporting KC) John Anthony Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Omar Gonzalez (L.A. Galaxy), Michael Orozco Fiscal (Puebla)

M - Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), Michael Bradley (AS Roma), Mikkel Diskerud (Rosenborg), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Graham Zusi (Sporting KC)

F - Jozy Altidore (Sunderland), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders), Landon Donovan (L.A. Galaxy), Aron Jóhannsson (AZ Alkmaar), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders)

I've got my guesses, but who do you think won't be in Brazil from this roster?

Jon said...

Orozco

Evans

Beckerman

Should in no way be in Brazil. Probably not Castillo either.

What's up with Chandler? Talk about falling off the face of the earth.

Mix finally got the call. Sweet.

And, man, Herc has to be looking over his shoulder at Aron now. That kid looks like a ringer.

I hope Rimando does not make it to Brazil. I would like to see Johnson or Hamid go and get the experiance of a WC. Since they are the future.

Herc looking over his shoulder at Aron? Naw, he's looking through the windshield. Into the distance.

Orozco appears to the 2nd choice RB, and he has earned it with his play there at Puebla over the last month. He may even be a sleeper starter candidate at RB for the WC.

As for Herc, isn't he hurt anyway?

Why is Brooks only available for Costa Rica? These are FIFA dates.

@Jon: How has Chandler fallen on the face of the earth? He isn't Shea or Ream. He just played 90min against Bayern Munich & he still has a chance to get back to the U.S. MNT this year. I think Jurgen is just giving him the lesson he just gave to Jozy & Landon.

@Jolazo: I like Fiscal but I doubt he makes the WC roster next summer.

@TrueCrew: Liviu Bird from NBC ProSoccer Talk tweeted that no set agreement exists, it's going to be interesting to see what happens.

Re: Brooks. If he's the fourth choice CB, I could see JK agreeing to send him back to Germany following the first game (assuming no injuries/suspensions following Costa Rica). Sure it would be great to have him stay and train with the team for as long as possible, but Brooks' club situation is also very important. And maybe JK gets something in return (e.g. a release on a non-fifa date)?

john, are you trying to suggest that coach klinsmann made jozy altidore perform better by keeping him out of the lineup? and of course same question for LD.

Paul Poenicke said...

dikranovich, I think it is plausible Klinsmann is working his psychological mind games with Chandler. The game goes something like this, I suppose:

Timmy: Hi, Coach! Like the looks of the new team...
Klinsi : Timmy, do you want to play for the US?
Timmy: Well, I would like do.
Klinsi: Tell me when you would die to play for the team.

From the patchy reports out of camp, this seems to be the best explanation of Chandler's absence from camp. Coach Klinsmann seems to be challenging Chandler's dedication--which has worked with other players to get them to the "next level." Perhaps Chandler's dedication isn't at the level Klinsmann needs to really make him part of the team. Eventually, I think Chandler will come around--he has to be better than Evans, and without Dolo on the right we are really bare at that spot. Hoping Dolo, Lichaj, Spector, and others get a chance to provide better defensive backs and substitute central defenders.

Even if this was the WC roster in 2014, I couldn't complain. It is amazing how Klinsmann's odd squad selection, so alien and bizarre months ago, has yielded such fruit in a limited season. Now it is time to see if his work continues to bear fruit in the harshest of climates.

@Timmy: It looks like Brooks is the 3rd choice CB now and is competing for a starting CB spot.

John said...

@dikranovich: It had to do with JK changing his tactics & Jozy working harder. Donovan is a different situation because he wanted to take a break.

in some parallel universe, omar plays for mexico, chandler plays for Germany, and john harkes and the rest of the boys won the miracle d' italia in 1990.

let that sink in for a minute or two.

Timmy said...

Hey John-
I agree with you on that point...but it is unclear that JK does. If I were guessing, I'd say that JK sees his top 3 CBs as Besler, Cameron, and Gonzo. Maybe in that order. Maybe Gonzo ahead of Cameron although I have trouble getting past the fact that Goodson started ahead of Gonzo in the Gold Cup Final.

this jozy injury is going to make for some interesting selection questions down in costa rica.

dikranovich said...

we can go down to costa rica with a defensive posture and still be looking for the full three points.

jozy to the sideline, just means everyone slides up one spot.

this means deuce moves from attacking mid to loan striker. it is a position he can handle, and should be able to get some good service from.

junior slides up to the attacking mid role, and forms a central midfield with Beckerman, and get this, Cameron. jj on the sideline at schalke means he has work to do.

this is an exciting midfield triangle, which will be flanked by zusi and Donovan providing stellar wing play.

its hard to imagine the captain from the gold cup not getting the nod on the left, and that pushes fj to the right.

this puts good speed on both wings, in the attack, and on defense.

besler and gonzo in the middle of the defense and this is a solid team that can hurt you in many ways.

much firepower sits on the bench, and could be called on if needed, in fact, the second half will be a good chance to keep the ticos on their heels with the addition of johannson and, or, ej

Wow. That is one delicious recipe for our first loss in 13 games. :/

John said...

@Timmy: JK sees Cameron as a DM. So I think his top 3 CBs are Besler, Gonzalez & Brooks.

John said...

@dikranovich: I highly doubt Beckerman starts over Jones & JK has already said that FJ will likely start at LM with Beasley at LB.

dikranovich said...

john, whatever coach klinsmann said, was before the jozy injury.

Timmy said...

John-Cameron has played DM for JK one time. He has played in the back multiple. Including at CB against Bosnia. I agree that DM is his best position, but I don't know that coach does...

dikranovich said...

---------------Dempsey----------

--Donovan-----junior---------zusi--

------Beckerman-----Cameron--------

--dmb-----gonzo----besler----fj----

------------t. howard-----------

this team should be able to pitch a shutout and score two, three goals.

John said...

Dikranovich: Yeah, but Jozy's injury doesn't affect where Fabian will play which will be at LM. Good things happen when Fab is in the attacking third. If Jozy isn't healthy by Friday I think we will see EJ or Aron start at top.

Just Call Me E said...

------Aron-----------EJohnson-----

FJohnson---Duece--Bradley--Lando---

Beasley--Gonzo--Besler--Castillo(?)

--------------Howard----------------

That's the lineup I'd love to see if Jozy can't go. (I'd love to cap tie Brooks with a sub if he'd let us. (Not sure he'd be in camp if he wasn't willing to tho...)

dikranovich said...

we could all remember that MLS players are playing at near playoff form, while European based players are weeks into a season.

Beckerman has been crushing it all summer and he is almost only getting better. more bigness coming from KB over these next couple games. JJ on the bench behind a prince, makes him a pauper. he is sure to become the recipient of coach klinsmanns ethos.

the player that keeps FJ in defense is g. zusi, he is the starting right mid. and he is lovely at covering much ground and FJ will get forward with great effect from the right back spot.

if coach rates brad evans as high as we think, Fabian Johnson might just be starting this costa rica game on the bench. as an American fan, you almost would have to applaud such a statement.

John said...

@dikranovich: Just because JJ didn't start for Schalke against Bayer Leverkusen it doesn't mean he will be a sub player for the rest of the season, the same goes for Bradley at Roma.
