Extra Time: The Footloose Kid

I have been dealing with a minor thumb sprain this week, but did manage to knock out this feature with AZ/USMNT forward Aron Jóhannsson. He made one rather interesting comment about club life that it seemed best to share.

Now we are getting too far behind in the league. Obviously, at the beginning of the season, the league is the most important thing. But now maybe we have to focus a little more on the cup competitions, because we are more likely for success in those games. In cup games, anything can happen, as we saw last year when we beat Ajax in the (KNVB Cup) semifinals.

One does not usually hear this type of remark regarding team priorities when it comes to league play and the extracurricular cups, and you all know how much I love refreshing honesty. In case you forgot, defending champs AZ are again into the final four of the Dutch Cup, as well as holding a 1-0 edge heading into tonight's Europa League round-of-32 second leg visit from Slovan Liberec.
