The Air Marshal Job

Right center back is not a great concern for me, though I know others out there are less confident in this group. Bear in mind when we slide left tomorrow that both Goodson and Gooch could be doing that on Klinsi's clipboard (a ka the one that actually counts). However, it says here that Gonzo needs to show he can go top shelf against someone besides Mexico, or he could be the potential slider on my depth chart.

Anyway you want to slice it, Onyewu is charging fast and has the most top-level experience. I told you all last year not to count him out, and here we are.

Clarence Goodson
Omar Gonzalez
Oguchi Onyewu

I dont get how Gooch can be improving his stock. When was his last good performance at the National team level? Every time he is called in he looks terrible. I cannot imagine playing someone with such limited mobility at the WC against the opposition we have.

The limitations of his mobility are exaggerated, I find. Same can be said of many critiques of his US play. But as I said in the other thread, athletic mobility is only half the movement speed picture, if that for a center back.

Gooch brings experience to the back line, even if he's not in the starting lineup.

Greg I guess we just have different opinions based on what we have seen of Gooch over the last 2 years.

I havent found him to be positionally brilliant or to read the game so well that he anticipates and cuts out attacking movement.

That's how I'd have it.

BH, I think you would have to admit that the center back position has a lot to do with the pairing of players and how they will complement each other. can we give gooch a couple games in May to play alongside besler and see what those two look like together?

gooch seems to have found his stride in the English second division, which they like to refer to as the championship, and their second division is actually the forth division. but whatever! it could still translate to a spot on the 23 man roster, and even a starting spot on the US national team.

Gooch hasn't been the same since that nasty knee injury from 09. He has only had 2 good performances for the U.S. since then (England & Ecuador). I don't think he will make the WC team.

People keep saying that, but where were they in 11/12 when he was the best Sporting center back?

Yeah, and that was during the time he played against Ecuador. I think he suffered an injury that made him miss the last 4 or so weeks of the 11/12 season for Sporting Lisbon. He made it to the U.S. May/June camp but unfortunately he looked like a statue against Antigua and Barbuda, and that was when quite a few fans including myself though he was done for the U.S. MNT. He wasn't done but that friendly against Ecuador back in 2011 was the last time he looked like the old Gooch for the USA.
