Despite a 'positive' performance, as their pundits might say, the English were brushed back by a strong Italian side, falling 2-1 due to defense woes. In a somewhat atypical display, the Italian squad was not afraid to hit right at the heart of the English defense, refusing to base their play solely on a strong defensive effort.
Italy struck first, as Claudio Marchisio was left open outside of the center of the English 18 for a long range attempt that Joe Hart was unable to get to the shot. The Bearded Wonder - Pirlo - was calm and collected as ever on the ball and helped to set up multiple Italian opportunities, including Marchisio's by dummying the ball to his fellow midfielder.
England drew level when Daniel Sturridge ran onto a cross and smacked home the equalizer from inside the Italian six. Mario Balotelli would pull Italy ahead by beating Gary Cahill to a far post cross, easily placed his header into the back of the net.
