Fairly surprised at the formation choice, not surprised Julian Green sits this one out to continue regaining fitness. As always, USMNT player ratings will go up at MLSS not too long after the final whistle.

You know Green was sent back to Germany, right?

And sorry if that came off rude, didn't mean it to.
No worries, I did not think it rude. And yeah, Thursday was a very busy real world day, so that tidbit actually slipped past me. Either way, I was surprised he got the call in the first place.
I tell you what, as tough as that last play was, and we could have walked away with three points, but bobby wood, he is a real player, and he will look good in that 23 in the future.
he is a two way player and he had hands down some of the nicest touches on the night, save one touch mix disk had, trying to do his best jack mac twista.
a win would have been nice tonight, but there were a lot of positives coming out of this game, not the least of which was the introduction of some new talent, with more talent in the wings just itching for a chance.
In response to your MLS player ratings column:
serious question: by gate-minding, you mean you don't like having someone sitting as a shield in front of the back four? didn't you say "the middle of the park was too easy for Ecuador to slice"? I feel like having a guy in that spot can be really helpful, even if it's "boring".
Exactly, Luke.
Hey Greg,
Sorry, I'm a little confused by that and am just interested in hearing your thoughts. If the midfield was to easy to slice, wouldn't a shield like that be a good solution? However, you said you didn't really want a guy like that. If so, how would we solve the problem in the midfield? Or do you think it was a good move, just a boring one?
Thanks!
i love when jurgen announces it as a 4-4-2 and everyone is shocked at the formation choice. same thing when we were playing with the "diamond". our formation has not changed. its a back 4, two box-to-box mids, an attacking mid, and a striker. LD was a second striker, altidore was the striker. 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2, 4-3-3, the numbers are arbitrary
the biggest problem with the defense the other night, was replacing two center halfs at the same time. but its good to put these guys in under fire, and see how they respond.
it was a flat 4-4-2 and bedoya and mix never really worked out their defensive assignments, and there was a gap between the midfield and defense.
and now with these new additions, coach klinsmann has some selection problems. the answer; 3-5-2
its so simple.
fiscal on the right and ream on the left and besler in the middle.
you solve the gap between midfield and defense with jj and mb, and give mix freedom in an attacking mid position. yeldin and prolly zusi on the wings and deuce and the jozy up top, and if jozy cant get premium service from this formation and lineup, then im a monkeys uncle.
zusi as a wingback is a joke. fabian can do it. deuce does not have the attributes to play the roving winger position in a modern 5-3-2/3-5-2
thats the biggest reason we can't play that formation. the second striker/roving winger is a slot we dont have a player to fill. arjen robben, gio dos santos, alexis sanchez.... this is the type of player we do not have. dempsey is good but does not have the speed.
I think the American 3-5-2 and the dutch 5-3-2/3-5-2 are played a little differently.
im not sure what attributes you think deuce has, if he cant play striker, but whatever.
its a 3-5-2 Tuesday night.
three center halfs
two defensive mids
three attacking mids,
and two strikers.
3-5-2/5-3-2 only has 1 striker. the other "forward" is a roving winger. dempsey is not a winger.
3-5-2 with 2 strikers would get destroyed
dany, why would a formation list itself one way, yet play another way. I mean, do any four man backlines actually play with a fifth defender? maybe in the 4-1-2-1-2, that six spot is actually a roving center half, which I guess if it is ream or Cameron, that basically what it is.
plenty of teams out there will trot out a 3-4-3, we can manage on defense, with three central defender and two defensive mids, along with two wing backs.
maybe someone can explain to me how this formation, as opposed to any other will get destroyed, at home, against inferior opposition no less?
