Lady Nats Open With W

It was not as easy as the score makes it seem. Next up for the USWNT: Sweden on Friday.

Abby is going to have to make those headers in the future if the US is to make it to the finals. Hopefully all the early WC jitters are gone. It was a nervy first 60'.

The poor Aussie keeper was woeful going to her left. That scoreline could have easily been reversed if not for Solo. The USA has lots to work on!

Is punt and run going to be our offensive strategy for this cup?

Interesting to see if Press and Wambach (if Morgan can start) continue to start. Goal aside, both looked pretty lost.

@DaM I think it's pretty clear that Press is being played out of position. Also, I think there is a huge selection dilemna at striker - pick two out of Wambach, Leroux, Press, and Morgan. Wambach looked less than sharp and way off the pace yesterday yet is the captain. Morgan isn't 100%, so do you go for two smaller, faster strikers in Press and Leroux (and thereby eliminating most Route 1 attacks) with Heath assuming the right side of midefield, saving Morgan and Wambach as late subs?

The problem in the past was that the team was way too dependent on Wambach. If she was off or unavailable, they had no answers. Rapione makes this team so much more balanced. She is also, in a sense, the female Dempsey, with same strengths (audacity, willing ness to shoot) and weakness (occasional tunnel visions, has games when she gets disconnected from teammates.)

the USWNT had finally started to look good in the warm-up matches, we were possessing, we were probing, we were patient, we kept the ball, we moved it around on the floor. Chris is right. it was all punt and run yesterday. Either Jill Ellis gave them an earful for that performance or we have learned nothing from 2011. that shit might fly in the group stage, but it's not gonna win the world cup.

i don't think megan rapinoe passed the ball backwards a single time. lost it a million times. primitive. smh.
