Wam-blast

Abby Wambach lit the lamp as the USWNT cruised to the knockouts as group champs after a 1-0 win over Nigeria. They will now face one of the third place sides (at this time, either England or France from Group F seems rather likely) on Monday.

Glad they made it through without incident.

Off-topic: Greg, WTF? I've been worried about the NSA for the last year when all along I should have been worried about the Cardinals spying on me. Can you please answer for your city and explain what the hell is going on?

I have no idea, but it seems like hacking is a rather strong word for what happened...

"Maybe it was the same execs who perpetrated the hack who did this, in which case they should be fired into the sun for being the stupidest people on the planet..."

God I love Deadspin. And man they're right, stupidity abounds in this story.

@Matt agreed about making it through sans incident... but they really haven't looked gooid doing it. Not sure Jill Ellis knows how to fit her pieces together. For my money (not that there's much of it:)) they are playing the wrong formation. 4-3-3 feels like it makes way more sense for this team.

the team still doesn't look good, i agree, and i agree that 4-3-3 (with leroux and morgan as the wingers?) makes more sense. we desperately need someone in the middle of the pitch who can keep possession (tobin heath?). CM looks like our weak spot, all of those players having serious trouble completing basic passes.

@DT Yeah first instinct is Leroux and Morgan as wingers. But I think that's wrong. I would have my front 3 be Morgan/Leroux/Press or Brian (assuming a 3 woman midfield of Rapinoe (even though I think she is overrated), Lloyd and Holiday). Wambach looks like a shadow of herself and if she isn't hammering home headers I don't see keeping her in the starting lineup just to be useful on defensive set piece coverage. Hopefully the 4-3-3 would also kind of hide the fact that Rapinoe can't seem to get the ball off her foot.
