This is becoming a thing. (updated)

The kind of thing the USMNT could exploit tactically, but we can discuss that later. For now, stand and cheer for Daniel Williams, who just notched his third Championship strike of the season to double the Reading lead over Bolton to 2-0. Ten minutes before halftime, the midfielder stepped into the ball just outside the area to dent the net from 20.

UPDATE: Ka-bam. His goal play starts at about the :48 mark.

Obviously saying this makes me sound like a bit of a bandwagonner (or is it bandwagoneer...no that sounds like a truck from the early 70's) but I would really like to see our midfield evolve into Williams (or Morales or Trapp), Nagbe and Bradley. I mean it makes perfect sense. Play the 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 so we don't need a pure #10 and let Nagbe and Bradley play together with a true #6 behind them. I get frustrated because while JK seems to somehow know that is our best formation with the current personnel... he seems to refuse to rely on it (or the right personnel, but that is a different story).

Anyway... go danny!

Danny isn't a true #6. He plays as a box-to-box midfielder for Reading, usually on the right side. A true #6 (ala Beckerman) sits in front of the centerbacks and acts as more of a destroyer. Danny has had some really really bad games for the US trying to play that role. He doesn't have the positional discipline and he's had some terrible giveaways that have left the CBs out to dry and led to costly goals. Costa Rica recently being the most obvious example but he also had a similar performance 2 or 3 years ago when he was asked to play that role. He's really best suited for the role that Jones has played in the lead up to the World Cup. The problem with that is that he's not nearly as good as Jones at anything other than maybe running with the ball on the counter.

Fair enough. I think he could play there pretty effectively on the right team, but there was a reason i gave other options.
