Camp Cupcake Party List

I am seconds from hitting the hay, but I will have some commentary (both happy and nagging) about Klinsi's roster selection for this year's January camp tomorrow morning. Buckle up, it's a fairly odd one - even by Camp Cupcake standards.

G - Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Luis Robles (New York Red Bulls)

D - Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Matt Besler (Sporting KC), Matt Miazga (New York Red Bulls), Eric Miller (Montreal Impact), Tim Parker (Vancouver Whitecaps), Marc Pelosi (San Jose Earthquakes), Matt Polster (Chicago Fire)

M - Fatai Alashe (San Jose Earthquakes), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Mikkel Diskerud (New York City FC), Jermaine Jones (Unattached), Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers), Lee Nguyen (New England Revolution), Tony Tchani (Columbus Crew), Wil Trapp (Columbus Crew)

F - Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC), Ethan Finlay (Columbus Crew), Jerome Kiesewetter (Stuttgart), Jordan Morris (Unattached), Khiry Shelton (New York City FC), Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy)

- Greg Seltzer

Thought #1 - yes to Nagbe, Trapp, Tchani and Finlay.

Thought #2 - what the... well, you know.. does Matt Hedges have to do to get a call up?

Thought #3 - would we not be better off having separate, but simultaneous, camps for the U-23's and the senior squad, and then bringing the two together as necessary? This half and half approach doesn't work, in my opinion. It allows only some of the U-23's to get experience with the full squad (not all), while forcing Klinsi to leave out potential senior team players, some of whom could actually help the squad in 2016 (see Hedges, Matt). It seems like by trying to combine, we're hurting both squads.

Drew, re: Thought #3 - that would make way too much sense! As helpful (and promising) as guys like Hedges and Lletget could be over Parker and Kiessewetter, we need to make sure a subset of the U-23's learn from class acts like Jermaine Jones and play against teams no where near similar to Columbia!

Drew - yes. Most infuriating piece is that there aren't 2 separate camps, keeping many people at least worthy of a chance away from the full team camp. People are just accepting this, as if JK had no chance but to combine the camp - ridiculous. This was the last chance for the U23s to get together with most of their team. Almost no way we win that playoff. If JK wants us to qualify for Olympics so badly, absolutely should have been 2 separate camps.

People, people, people, come on, use your brain cells. Just ask yourselves how many of our under/23 are in Europe currently, and I think you will find the answers you seek.

I'm reminded of the great Donald Sutherland in Kelly's heroes. For a lot of yuns I don't even have to repeat the phrase, because it is so engrained in our conscious. Clearly, not everyone however, knows this movie.
