THE Suicide Squad

So here is the actual 23 selected for the Olympic qualifying do-or-die against Colombia. I did not get Brooks or Yedlin, but I did get Morris and a few others with senior caps. Payne is a worthwhile substitute for Yedlin, but I fear the absence of Brooks could cost. I got most of the attack I wanted, but unless Pulisic is not in the senior side this time, color me stunned. And if he is, I'm a bit surprised - he could benefit the program much more with this group right now.

G - Cody Cropper (MK Dons), Ethan Horvath (Molde FK), Zach Steffen (Freiburg)

D - Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Matt Miazga (Chelsea), Eric Miller (Colorado Rapids), Tim Parker (Vancouver Whitecaps), Desevio Payne (Groningen), Shane O'Neill (Cambridge United), Brandon Vincent (Chicago Fire), Walker Zimmerman (FC Dallas)

M - Fatai Alashe (San Jose Earthquakes), Paul Arriola (Tijuana), Luis Gil (Querétaro), Julian Green (Bayern Munich), Emerson Hyndman (Fulham), Jerome Kiesewetter (Stuttgart), Matt Polster (Chicago Fire), Dillon Serna (Colorado Rapids), Wil Trapp (Columbus Crew)

F - Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders), Mario Rodriguez (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Khiry Shelton (New York City FC)

meh. no surprise that klinsman and herzog came up with this nonsense. No Brooks, No Yedlin, No CP10, Zelalem injured I hear, No CCV and no Canouse. Not very excited about what that midfield is going to looks like... Trapp, Hyndman... alashe? Had a chance to bring a really strong defense. All I can say is Yedlin and Brooks better be starting (and not in the midfield) for the senior team.

There is no official need to release players, right? Could it be Yedlin and Brooks just weren't released by their clubs? That's how I took it.

any chance bvb wanted to keep pulisic in town for his development? or that the US coaches thought it would be better for him to keep training in dortmund?

@ Dr.Jon:

It's a FIFA break. They have to release players. Those two will obviously be with the senior side.

@ Dany:

First question: Don't they always? But still, see above. Second question: If that's their answer, I'm not buying it. Perhaps the Johnson injury has him with the senior side.

Read somewhere that CCV picked up a last second injury and, hence, was omitted. Not convinced the back line will be good enough but I hope we don't reprise polster/serna fullback experiments.

Greg, are you saying club teams don't have to release players for the Olympics, but since these winner take all games against Colombia fall on FIFA dates, they do?

Dany Tzvi said...

Could it also be that we want to captie pulisic with the wcq? He's eligible for croatia, right? And possibly germany in the future

dikranovich said...

Dany, pulisic ain't playing for Croatia, nor is he considering Germany, under any kind of circumstances. Sorry!

Greg Seltzer said...

Not that I think it's any issue, but the Colombia matches would also cap-tie him.

DaM,

It is a FIFA window but that does not apply to the Olympic team.

If the US had asked for Brooks and Yedlin just for the Olympics it is possible their clubs would have said NO. For the WC qualifiers, it is a different story.

CCV is injured.

@greg - RE: Pulisic - I thought what OZ said "It is a FIFA window but that does not apply to the Olympic team." Is that incorrect?

Greg Seltzer said...

FIFA breaks during the club season apply to Olympic squads, but of course they play some early qualifiers outside these breaks.

Do you speak German? From the BVB twitter feed:

"@ReneWolber Ja, er ist mit dem @ussoccer_ynt unterwegs."

So are they wrong? Or is he getting added to the U23 roster?
