I thought I got this up the other day, but I've been under the weather, so I probably dozed off instead. Anywaaay, Aaron Schoenfeld bagged a hat trick on Sunday as Hapoel Tel Aviv secured their Ligat Ha-Al status with a 4-3 decision over derby rivals Bnei Yehuda. His goals (which gave him eight in 11 outings since arriving to Hapoel and five in the last three games) can be seen at the 1:07, 2:30 & 3:59 marks for those in a rush.

This is an appropriate title for a post talking about the survival trick Big Sam pulled off with Sunderland today. Glad DeAndre was a part of it.

Defoe on fire!
Seems like dumping Altidore for Defoe worked out for them
could have dumped altidore for some random out of the over 45yr league and it would have worked out for them better. HA!
Yeeeah...
Altidore's full season at Sunderland = 38 points, five above the drop zone.
Sunderland this season with one game left = 38 points, four above the drop zone.
And Altidore's S'land squad featured an inferior back line, an inferior midfield, a culture of selfish drunkards and a child molester. But sure. It's a whole new world there now.
now lets see altidores stats from his full season up against Defoes...i rest my case.
two very different players. defoe is a poacher, altidore is a target man who brings teammates into the play. the way jozy plays he is only as good as the attacking midfielders around him, and those he had at sunderland were utterly useless.
both are strikers, fact. Which are usually judged on goals scored. We can compare assist and goals. i mean, since altidore "brought teammates into the play"
Only you didn't mention scoring when you started this discussion. You only mentioned how it worked out for Sunderland as a team. That is what I replied to.
Defoe >Altidore
Sunderland with Defoe > Sunderland with Altidore
Don't be crazy.
I never argued that Defoe wasn't a better player. But the reality is that, against a weaker EPL, Sunderland has a better overall roster, yet just five more goals scored and the same amount of points (with one game remaining). They have fared only infinitesimally better as a team with Defoe than they did with Altidore. Them's the facts.
weaker EPL, better overall roster... Them's just opinions
Hmm, going by clubelo's numbers, they make the final elo ratings of the EPL:
2015/2016: average=1716, median=1696 (Everton), Sunderland=1664
2014/2015: average=1693, median=1680 (Swansea), Sunderland=1614
In that period the homefield advantage averaged just about 50 points.
So basically it'd be a wash if you had the teams from 2014/2015 play the teams from 2015/2016 home and away ;)
whoa actual research! nice work, tom!
at least greg knows to shut up and go away when is is wrong...
