Your Copa America squad

Forgive my tardiness, me and the lady just got back from seeing Muse's last show of six in Milan (FYI: It was Ba-DASS). First off, what you see below is exactly how the USMNT roster release listed the players, so right off the bat you know my stomach is churning over FabJo's apparently impending usage.

I'm also quite confused over the sudden inclusion of Horvath, who Klinsmann has (at least temporarily) cost his Molde starting job for nothing more than bench duty. I could go on with a few more gripes, but you've all heard it before. The growing refusal to learn lessons is grinding my teeth over here. Screw this... I'm gonna go eat some veal ravioli buried in freshly grated pecorino.

G - 1-Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), 12-Tim Howard (Colorado Rapids), 22-Ethan Horvath (Molde FK)

D - 5-Matt Besler (Sporting KC), 3-Steve Birnbaum (D.C. United), 6-John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), 20-Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), 21-Timmy Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt), 23-Fabian Johnson (Borussia Moenchengladbach), 14-Michael Orozco (Tijuana), 2-DeAndre Yedlin (Tottenham)

M/F - 15-Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), 11-Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), 4-Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), 8-Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders), 13-Jermaine Jones (Colorado Rapids), 16-Perry Kitchen (Hearts), 10-Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers), 17-Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund), 18-Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes), 7-Bobby Wood (Hamburg), 20-Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy), 19-Graham Zusi (Sporting KC)

Greg, looking at this roster, do you think Klinsmann will go three at the back? Given that out of the 8 selected defenders, 5 generally play centrally (granted Cameron has played out right for Stoke on occasion).

Seriously doubt it. I'd see a 5-3-2 before I saw a 3-5-2, but neither seems likely.

i think he plans on using orozco as a fullback

the roster reveal during halftime of the new york mls game had me screaming at my television. how omar gonzalez, and edgar castillo are left off and timmy chandler is brought it.... i am speechless, really. i also don't like beckerman and jones over morales and williams. zusi is decent but nguyen or morris would have been better imo. of course, fabian at fullback is frustrating.

wouldn't mind seeing cameron step up into the midfield with all the CB options.

still a deep roster. hopefully we can make it out of the group.

really anybody over chandler. cant believe jk goes around talking about playing time. guys need playing time on their clubs or they cant play for the nats. then goes and calls in timmy who's still pulling splinters out of his butt from this year with frankfurt. ridiculous.

i was not crying for him in midfield when he was playing fullback for his club. thanks for playing, though.

The Chandler inclusion was pretty surprising to me too; all in all I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this roster yet. Cautiously optimistic, maybe?

Howard and Guzan are long in the tooth; whoever is going to be there in 2018 should be on this roster. If Horvath is good enough to start for us at the World Cup he should be able to get his job back. In fact, bigger clubs should be in the market for him this summer.

The roster includes Pulisic and Nagbe. That is the most exciting thing for me. I hope he plays them and can't really get worked up over Gonzales over Orozco. Some players are good when starting but not great on the bench or in practice otherwise. Other guys don't play but give it everything they have on the practice field. These latter guys are more important to JK as the 21st and 22nd guys. That is my guess as to why Orosco is there (no other logical reason haha). Wondo I've heard is like that too.

Wondo is a complete head scratcher for me (aside from the baseless but obviously predictable orozco inclusion). unless klinsman thinks wondo is going to contribute at the next world cup or he's going to start in this tournament (neither of which is going to happen) the only reason for the continued inclusion of a 33 year old borderline player who at best will get desperate sub minutes is to further try to defend his inclusion in the last world cup.

nothing else makes sense.

i think the copa america is an important tournament standing apart from the world cup, and it behooves klinsmann to call in the 23 best available players to win this competition. pulisic is there but miazga is not. wondo is here because *right now* he is the best option and is in very good form (just scored 2 in a friendly against real sociedad, including a 20 yard curler).
