Simply the Dest

I'll get to today's USMNT roster reveal shortly, but first let's tip our caps to Ajax right back Sergiño Dest, who only earned Man of the Match honors for his Champions League debut. Hopefully, some kind soul puts together an every-touch reel for us soon enough. I'd actually like to see it, as I was working and unable to really pay attention to the game.

And this was no small occasion. Ajax were scoreless in their playoff round tie against APOEL Nicosia heading into tonight's home leg. Then the fresh US call-up did stuff like this and the Dutch giants were on their way to the group phase...

He looked pretty good I thought, but it was APOEL. Particulary on the road this wasn’t a match likely to test dest. When dest is at his best (ok I’ll stop) he is attacking and he definitely was slashing all over in the final third and making guys look uncertain. I think he was more threatening over the course of the full match than anyone and that’s saying a bit still. But I don’t think he had to defend much. Certainly not In the 2nd half. So I guess I’m saying he is what we think he is probably? Certainly worth a look for the senior team, though I’m a big cannon fan. To me he would be perfect if we were running a 3 man back line. Maybe a 3421. Feels like this squad is crying out for that. I guess maybe you’d have to find a spot for pomykal if it turns out he’s ready. But I digress...
